A special first Vespers at Parkminster

From time to time, I am privileged to visit St Hugh's Charterhouse, Parkminster to teach sacramental theology to the novices. It is a great blessing for our country that this powerhouse of prayer is full.

Today, as usual, I stay on for Vespers and am delighted to realise that it is the eve of the feast of the English Carthusian Martyrs. In the calendar for England and Wales, 4 May is now observed as the feast day for all the English and Welsh martyrs. At Parkminster, according to the Carthusian calendar since 1887, it is the feast of saints (then blesseds) John Houghton, Robert Lawrence and Augustine Webster. It is observed as a solemnity with first Vespers. What a treat to be able to celebrate such an office in such a place!
