Welcome Catholic Times readers

Joanna Bogle (known to bloggers as Auntie Joanna) has written a feature about me that has been published in this weekend's Catholic Times (The article is not available online as far as I can tell.) The piece is illustrated by the photo that I have recently put on the sidebar.

If you have come to this blog after reading the article, welcome! If you find it interesting, you can browse around by using the labels at the bottom of each post, the archives in the sidebar or the search box at the top of the screen. Comments to the blog are moderated and I have written about comments on blogs in general and comments on this blog.

If you are new to Catholic blogs, have a look at some of the excellent blogs listed in the sidebar under "Blogroll."

(not related to this post)

hello Father,

I would be very grateful if you could help me out please.

I know a Priest who sometimes celebrates Mass with a ciboria of consecrated hosts in the corner of the altar.

The ciboria of hosts is taken from the tabernacle and placed in the corner of the altar (behind the book) just before the start of Mass.
The ciboria is then left there till after the consecration.

After the consecration of the chalice and the Priest's large host, the Priest then takes the ciboria from the corner of the altar and places them on the corporal with the chalice and the other large hosts.

He then distributes them to the people, and after communion a deacon brings the ciboria back to the tabernacle.

This makes me feel very very uneasy & I want to talk with the Priest about it.

Is he allowed to do this?

Can you give me any words of advise regarding what I can say?

Many many thanks

God Bless.

(I live in England)

Anon - No, this is not really right. The ciborium should be taken from the tabernacle just before Holy Communion if necessary.

The new rite of Mass encourages priests to consecrate hosts for the Mass that they are celebrating but this is not always practical if there is a large number of people at Mass or if a large number of hosts remains from Sunday Masses.

If you want to speak to Father about it, you might suggest that the act of him or the Deacon going reverently to the tabernacle to fetch the ciborium is a reminder to the people of the abiding presence of Christ and may give them a few moments more in which to prepare devoutly to receive Holy Communion.

One thing of course you could do if you are a lay reader would be to make a point of very elaborately double genuflecting in the direction of the ciborium when coming to and leaving the sanctuary in the same way as you would during exposition of the blessed sacrament (which is what it actually is), same thing if you arrive at Church after the ciborium has been removed from the tabernacle.
