New computer - aaaargh!

It really was time I got a new laptop. But this was something I was dreading. And even worse I was just in time to get Windows Vista - as with all things Windows, this is the mug-punters' beta version. My dread was well founded. The brand new (Microsoft) wireless laser keyboard and mouse wouldn't even install with it. I had to use the old computer to connect to the internet for updated drivers. The wireless networking modem didn't work so I installed the old modem with a relatively recent driver which gave a repeated "blue screen of death" until I uninstalled it. And so on and so on per omnia saecula saeculorum. So much valuable time wasted.

And it was only after a few hours of this that I remembered to offer it up. How many years could I have got off purgatory if I had remembered earlier! I can make up for that when I try again to set up wireless networking and then connect the printers and mobile device. Oh joy!

I feel better about it taking me so long to set up the desktop...

...I opened the printer box, took one look at all the bits, closed it back up again, and fled...

But why are you supporting the dreaded Bill Gates and his microsoft empire? You should have gone for an Apple. There would have been absolutely no problems.

All sounds gobbledegook to me!

New machine? Try this on it. I ama fan of paper and pencil, but I am just redrafting the help file for this and it is

funkisssssssssssssssssssimo! I am so impressed. Especially for people using more than one machine in more than one place. It is amazing.

www.cipherme.net and click the Webee button on the bottom left to install it.

(pass over the dubious English on the website, I think I will be asked to do it next)

I thought that the first rule of Vista was "wait until they release SP 1".

Well exactly - I suggested SP 3 or 4 to the guy in the business centre. He agreed that most companies are not installing Vista for a while yet. Sadly, the computers we bought had it pre-installed :-(

Heheheh... it is also interesting to note that the sales bods at PC World all use Firefox rather than IE, and Open Office rather than Microsoft Office...

...I think that speaks volumes...!!

Father: Not to start an OS-flame here, but maybe you can uninstall your Vista & install SOMETHING else.. like Linux? :) My friend's brand new laptop (running Vista) gave a BSOD on its first day... an endless source of penance & therefore offering for her!

I got three BSODs on the first day :-( and I don't think any of the drivers for anything have worked.

Linux - yes I'd love to migrate to that but to be honest, I'm waiting for another time when I can work on setting it up without having to use the thing immediately like someone needs a letter or a Mass intention or we need to do the newsletter etc.

And of course, you don't need a new computer for Linux - I'll just wipe and old one and put it on :-)

I have just got a new computer - an Apple iMac. It is a joy to use. I have no plans to return to Microsoft!
