But hey! Let's not let that get in the way of another Irresponsible Motu Proprio Speculation Alert. I'm waiting for the brickbat to fly from somewhere in Canada but I think the time difference means that I'm going to get whacked on the back of the head sometime yesterday afternoon.
(Seriously though, Fr Z. makes some important points in his post - as ever, well worth reading.)

Alas, Father, I've learned never to believe anything I read in the Italian newspapers....
¡Ha, ha, ha! This Benedict XVI sure likes suspense. We will see the flop he begets.
This is possibly a naive question but, why is this all taking so long ? if a Motu Proprio means His Holiness can make a pronouncement of his own without the say so of anyone else.. well.. why hasn`t he ? Is it purely down to God's perfect timing and waiting for the right moment ?
Ann - I'm not so skeptical about the Italian papers. They have had news about several important appointments way ahead of anyone else. The best, such as Sandro Magister and Andrea Tornielli are better informed by far than any of our journalists.
Bernadette - I think that Pope Benedict fully appreciates the controversial nature of this move and is genuinely making sure that everything is exactly as he wants it and that it is issued at exactly the right time. Trouble is, of course we have no idea when that is :-)
'All Hell will break loose' - is what a cardinal is alledged to have said will happen - when the moto finally lands!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
I suspect that His Holiness has worked out that there are thousands of people praying for his longevity and half of them will stop (or cut back) the prayers once he releases the MP.
So he will probably keep us waiting for another 30 years if he has any sense :-)
