What the Pope therefore wants us to understand is that he is assisting the Church in her search for 'reform' instead of 'reformation'.As well as hoping to restore unity among Catholics, he is also saying that the Council must be understood in continuity with the whole of the Church's history, and not as some totally new beginning that rejected the entire past.
Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.

Birmingham Oratory Newsletter on Summorum Pontificum
Jackie Parkes has posted the article by Fr Guy Nicholls in the Birmingham Oratory Newsletter this week. Fr Guy's article is an excellent short summary for Catholics who may be wondering what it is all about. His conclusion is also a summary of the concept behind the title of this blog:

Thanks for this posting, Fr. T.
What a very helpful commentary by Fr. Guy. I don't know him personally. He sounds very nice.
Have you read the splendid piece by Dr. Alcuin Reed In The Catholic Herald ? (Nice to see your picture in the Herald BTW)
I see Dr. Alcuin Reed's article is also posted at New Liturgical Movement.
These words seem to sum up what
Summorum Pontificum is all about :
"The Holy Father ..has taken down the legal barriers that should never have been erected in the first place."
"The juridical proscription of the Church's older liturgical tradition was a historical anomaly.."
Well, that proscription has been well and truly abolished.
The hermeneutic of rupture is gone.
The hermeneutic of continuity is
a reality.
God bless the genius and humility of Pope Benedict.
Father
How are we to call the extraordinary mass - ie, if I go to my PP - what do I say? Is it Latin mass, Old Rite, extraordinary mass?
Also, is it prudent to wait for the 14th sept before registering one's interest in the extraordinary form of the mass?
Dominie
Are all these Nicholls (Vincent, Aidan, Guy ...) related? I think we should be told.
Dominie - The 14 September question is worthy of discussion. In brief, I do not think that it is the intention of the Holy Father to allow priests to say private Masses in the old rite only after that date.
However the legal provisions come into force on that date and would affect any recourse against an unlawful decision etc.
When asking your priest, it would probably be simplest to refer to the "Old Rite Mass". The best approach would depend very much on the priest's likely attitude.
It is to ge hoped that this will allow the riches of tradition to be enjoyed and by a new generation of Catholics. What a catechetical task awaits us now... and what an opportunity.
