Mass at St Mary Moorfields

I am singing Mass tomorrow evening at St Mary Moorfields, the Catholic Church in the City of London.

The Blessed Sacrament will have been exposed earlier in the day. At 6pm, the parish will have Evening Prayer in the Church. This will be followed by Benediction and then by a Missa Cantata in the extraordinary form at 6.30pm. The Mass is arranged by the Latin Mass Society.

Don't you think "extraordinary form" is a ridiculous term? What's wrong with "traditional Latin Mass"? Makes more sense to me. Like the Ronseal advert - it does exactly what it says on the tin. "Extraordinary form" makes me cringe everytime I see it. It's a dreadful piece of mealy-mouthed obfuscation.

Pope Benedict a mealy-mouthed obfuscator?!

Actually I agree with you that the term is not a felicitous one. The only point of using it is to emphasise the Motu Proprio. Though I suppose we have done that now and could return to TLM - or, as I still obstinately prefer, Classical Roman Rite :-)

An interesting point from Anon.

Father Tim will correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it the wording in "Summorum Pontificum" (forma ordinaria and forma extraordinaria), far from being obfuscatory, is juridical language used precisely to emphasise the two Missals are one and the same Rite : the Roman rite.

Any priest of the Roman rite has the right to celebrate in the Roman rite (whichever Missal he uses).

The Pope has said so.
The Motu Proprio has juridically stated that it so.

Therefore, no special permissions are needed henceforth.

It seems to me a quite brilliant juridical solution.

But, yes, I agree with Anon that there is really no need to continue to use the term unless one is specifically discussing "Summorum Pontificum".

Pastorally, it would seem reasonable to use whatever term we prefer : older form, "old" Mass, usus antiquior,
Tridentine Mass, traditional Mass, Mass according to the 1962 Missal, or whatever.

Various priests have said there is really no need to stick to any one term, provided we all know what is meant.

I don't think we were ever expected to go through life henceforth referring to "the extraordinary form".

Of course, one sees that there are, and will be for a long time, pastoral and other practical difficulties in providing the "old" Mass on days of precept on a regular basis.

Nevertheless, I have no doubt that the vetus ordo will one day triumph over the novus ordo.

It's me again.

Many thanks to Father Tim for his link to St. Mary Moorfields website.

I wonder if there is a book on the subject of this church and/or its predecessor, the classical style church built c. 1820 in Finsbury Square, which for many years was the pro Cathedral.

Does anyone know ?

Ebomania once used 'Old Skool' to refer to the '62- that could catch on! :-)

Argh! I was *there* for the 1:05 Mass and I would have stayed around in the City if I'd known! Couldn't they even post this on the noticeboard? I thought I'd checked it. :(

This is what I get for not checking your blog yesterday, I guess....

May I ask, incidentally, what choir sang? Same as at your Blackfen SP-celebration Mass?

Fr Tim Finigan said...

Yes, same choir that sang for the SP celebration & also sing regularly at Maiden Lane.
