Matthew at the Shrine of the Holy Whapping has an excellent post on the 18th century Venetian engraver, Giambattista Piranesi. As a student in Rome, I often came across reproductions of Piranesi's engravings and will now see if my next visit to the eternal City can take in a visit to Santa Maria del Priorato. See the post The Genius of Piranesi which reviews an exhibition running until 20 January at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, entitled Piranesi as Designer.

Piranesi !
The great engraver of the ottocento.
Goodness, how that name brings back memories.
I have quite a few reproductions of his works which I brought back from Italy many years ago.
I would say to anyone who has a blank space on their wall at home,
hang some of Piranesi's "vedute".
(They'll go with any colour scheme.)
I somehow don't think I'll be nipping over to New York for the exhibition, so many thanks to Father Tim for the link.
For those who want to read about Piranesi, I would strongly recommend two books by John Wilton Ely :
The Mind and Art of Piranesi (1988)
Piranesi : a catalogue raisonee (1994)
I suppose they are out-of-print now, but try abebooks.com
Peter Wright's comment contains two errors :
Piranesi was an artist of the settecento.
Wilton Ely's catalogue raisonee was published under the title "Piranesi : The Complete Etchings".
There is a more recent book under the same title, by L.Ficcacci (2001)
People really should get their facts straight before commenting.
One of the good things about blogs and bloggers is that they are (ususally) far more willing to admit and correct mistakes than the print media. No shame in that!
