Mark Thompson, the Director General of the BBC, will be speaking at Westminster on 10 April to discuss "Faith in the Media". This will be the second of "The Cardinal's Lectures" and will take place on Thursday 10 April . Tickets can be ordered at the Cardinal's Lectures page at the Westminster Diocesan website. As it happens, with this amount of notice, that day is free. Provided nothing urgent comes up, I'll be there so we might be able to have a "Bloggers' meet" afterwards.

I once heard a rumour that Mark Thompson attended an SSPX church. Has anyone else heard this?
The link isn't working, and both the diocesan and cathedral websites seem very secretive about this event (it may be my incompetence, but I can't find a way to "drill down" to any information about this lecture).
Link doesn't work....
The Cardinal's Lectures link does not appear to be working. I hope they are being a little more careful this time about their choice of speakers after getting Bob Geldof in some years ago to talk about the Church's 'dubious theology and criminal stupidity' on the AIDS/condoms issue.
Meeting up on 10th April and having bloggers meeting as well excellent idea. I ll be there. You did not say what time the lecture was on. What about a meet in a nearby place where we could hire a room and have a meal. The Cardinal used to have such a room.
Cam't wait. Get yer Koran's out.
Sorry about the link. That was my mistake. But I can't find the page now. I don't think there is anything conspiratorial here, just confusing navigation and and a useless searchbox.
Fr Clifton - I think that it will probably be a case of going over to the trendy bar in the new glass-covered mall. Ageing liberals don't tend to go there but ageing trads fit in very well :-)
Found the link - it is working now. sorry for the inconvenience.
Oops. No apostrophe in Korans. That`s a Catholic Education for you... Mr T won`t display any such ignorance. He`ll be word perfect.
Guess who the guest speaker is going to be!!
So what if Mark Thompson did attend an "SSPX church"? There is no such thing as an "SSPX church"; there are churches where the Tridentine Mass is celebrated by SSPX priests. What of it? Such priests are not excommunicated, nor are the laity who worship at such Mases.
Father ~ can you explain canonically the status of SSPX please?
Their bishops are excommunicated but how come those who receive the sacraments from them (including ordination) are not?
Baffled!
Sadie - This is obviously a major subject and lots of bytes have been spent on it on the internet. I am not a canon lawyer but I think it would be correct to say that although the Bishops may be in schism, the laity who attend Mass need not formally adhere to the schism or themselves be engaging in a schismatic act.
Catholiclawyer, I meant there was a rumour about that Mr Thompson goes to Mass at a church run by the SSPX, of which there are, in fact, many. I merely think this is interesting given the nature of the BBC's output at times, don't you?
Fr T,
There are recognised canon lawyers who say in fact there is no schism.
