One of the only things Muslims do right...

Hmmm. I would disagree. Many of the practices of the Muslims have a clear link to early christianity - ramadan, praying 5 times a day, a serious commitment to the corporal works of mercy would be other things that many good Muslims do right. Sadly, the witness to the pro-life cause is not always as strong and public as it might be.

Regardless of how strong and reasonable the opposition and arguments of religious authorities are, people in the UK will continue to disregard them. It is a side effect of the widespread disdain for religion in the UK. people will cry out for a separation of church and state, even though churches are just explaining a very reasonable position. One just needs to read the Have Your Say section on BBC news to perceive the hatred... It seems that even if the church voiced secular arguments against the HFE bill not many people would listen.

It used to be the case that Roman Catholic priests prayed seven times a day, but with the brievary changes (following Vatican II) now becoming the "liturgy of the minutes", I fear you maybe right that the average Muslim prays more than the average Catholic priest ;-)

I must say however that Muslims will only perform "corporal works of mercy" when it applies to their own. Muslims are generally discouraged from aiding "infidels" especially the "people of the book". The Boxing Day Tsunami was a great illustration of how Muslims don't even help their own - Western countires gave more in aid to the countries affected than all the Islamic states put together.

And Muslims are not pro-life in the strictest sense - the Hadith permits abortion in the case of rape and up to a certain gestation period of the woman.

My guess would be that the Muslim times of prayer are taken basically from the Day Hours.

I think that international aid is a different thing from the personal practice of the works of mercy. You are right that Christians practice these towards non-christians in a way that Muslims do not feel necessary in regard to "infidels". Our Lord's teaching on "loving your enemies" is something that is quite a shock to Muslims. It is a good starting-point for conversation with a good Muslim.

But I think we should have these conversations. Many Muslims have been converted by hearing the gospel for the first time.

My general feeling is that right now, Muslims are not as much the enemy in terms of faith as the secularists.

All very well siding with Catholics on this issue but how can they at the same time stay silent on issues such as the relentless persecution and killing of Catholics by muslims elsewhere around the world - especially in their own countries???? Perhaps there's another agenda here???

If you purport to defend the right to life and the inviolate dignity of each human being then it applies equally to the unborn embryo as much as to the adult person??? How can they remain silent on or even worse actually applaud the horrors of 9/11, the London bombings, suicide bombings in Israel, the killings in Iraq etc...

The day that muslims start to be CONSISTENT in their supposed 'pro-life' posturing will be the day that I for one might be prepared to believe them.

To be fair, many moderate Muslims have condemned the terrorist atrocities - and indeed many of them oppose the building of the mega mosque, for example. But such statements are not widely reported.

Lord Alton's talk on the HFE bill is available as a powerpoint presentation. I was having trouble finding a link online, but have been emailled a copy and uploaded it. I have posted it on my own blog, but don't have much of an audience, so thought i would spread the link at other pro-life sites. It is available here. Please pass on to others, it is an extremely informative document.
