New film about St Philip Howard

Mary's Dowry Productions, an independent Catholic film company in England, has produced a film about one of our English Martyrs, St Philip Howard.

St Philip was imprisoned in the Tower of London by Queen Elizabeth I and died of dysentery after ten years in prison. As he was dying, he asked the Queen (his second cousin) for permission to see his wife and his son - who had been born after his imprisonment. The Queen refused unless he became a Protestant.

There are several other films in the pipeline.

I am v. pleased to see a Catholic Film Production Company in England and what a great unapologetic name for their company.

I hope their work prospers and that they will be eager to produce a film about the Gregorian Rite Mass. Now if one of those were sent to every Catholic School in England I wonder what would happen.

St Philip Howard and the Holy Martyrs of England opn.

and please, God, St. Margaret Clitherow.

THE
PEARL OF YORK

A girl, a lady,
Wife, a mother,
From church of England
She saw the other.

The other, where,
Her church came from.
The other, where,
The fruit was plumb.

The other, where,
Her church beat down,
And looted jewels
For earthly crown.

And watching, she,
Was irritated,
And slowly grew
Sophisticated.

Sitting, silent,
In her shell,
Her home, a place,
Where priests could dwell,

Confect the Mass,
Many saved,
For this, their limbs
And lives were braved.

Because a woman
Kept her shell,
A jealous fortress
Barring hell.

And then the weak
Pried open wide,
Exposing truth,
The shell’s inside,

Where mother, wife,
Lady, girl,
Had turned into
York’s royalist pearl.

We will be producing films on St Edmund Campion, St Robert Southwell, St Margaret Clitherow in due course! We are currently working on producing a film called 'Martyrs Walk' which was filmed live through the Martyrs Walk from Tower Hill to Tyburn with the Continuity Movement last month. It will trace the route the tyburn martyrs took and recount many powerful biographies of saints walking with us along the route such as Anne Line and Thomas More - its set to be extremely moving and powerful. So you don't need a script writer then? Ah well...

Bevansinc - now those are films I'll be watching out for. Great stuff! Go for it! If you need any extras to make up the baying crowds of on-lookers I'm up for it (very modest daily rates and I can cat-call very loudly - no job too small!) I also hear that Westminster Cathedral is always up for hosting location-shoots for 'blockbuster films' which no doubt yours will be. Apply to Ecclestone Square direct (not through me) .........

Any plans to film the incredible story of St Oliver Plunket the last Catholic Martyr to be murdered at Tyburn?

Reading the post and trying to get to grips with the barbarity and sheer cruelty of E1's refusal to allow St Philip (her own cousin!) to see his wife and child before he dies, just makes me think about that old adage 'blood is thicker than water'. Obviously doesn't apply to royal circles, as history has shown that they're often at each others throats!

One could make an exciting film about the Jesuit, Fr. John Gerard from his autobiography, "The Diary Of A Hunted Priest".

The Earl Of Wessex had a tv series, one of which dealt with the Tower Of London. HRH mentioned Fr. Gerard and how the priest escaped from the Tower.
