Radio 4 "Beyond Belief" discusses SSPX

Alcuin Reid was on Radio 4's "Beyond Belief" programme broadcast yesterday. The subject was the lifting of the SSPX excommunications and its various implications.

He was put in a contest against two opponents and came out of it very well. There is much in the piece about Vatican II and Alcuin manages to give some good clarification under fire about the different levels of assent required for different kinds of documents. Since I am sometimes rather negative about the BBC, I should say that the presenter, Ernie Rea, was quite fair and balanced.

I listened to this. I just kept on wanting to butt in and say something.

Alcuin spoke very well; the other two utter garbage!

I, too, listened to this excellent programme. I was struck by the fact that Reid had a far superior knowledge of the Second Vatican Council in its proper theological and historical context. In fact, I would recommend that Pepinster enrolls at Maryvale, such was her abysmal ignorance. The basic point that Reid stressed was that Vatican II is in continuity with the traditon of the Church.

I had a similar feeling to Paul's. The thing I most wanted to say was that there seemed to be an implication from some quarters that catholics ought to be excommunicated for political incorrectness, and I should have liked to hear whether Miss. Pepinster and the chap from Oxford would have argued that.

The first thing which struck me though was this: the presenter referred to the SSPX as the "Society of Pope Pius X". I wonder whether this was just a slip or whether as a protestant minister he couldn't bring himself to say "Saint Pius".

Catherine Pepinster showed appalling ignorance when she said that the SSPX will be made subscribe to everything in the VII as a prelude to reconciliation. When the IBP reconciled they were allowed to offer 'constructive criticism' of the Council--as Bobby Mickens points out in this week's Tablet. Doesn't she even read her own magazine? I wouldn't blame her though if she didn't.
