Michael Hobson, one of my parishioners and the son of "Vesper", a frequent commenter, is hoping to compete in the Olympic Games in 2012. You can read an update of Michael's activities on his BBC blog where he speaks of training with Kelly Holmes, and of a charity race at his old sixth form college in aid of the Adolescents Unit at the royal Marsden Hospital, in memory of his friend Joe Allen who tragically died recently. Please say a prayer for the repose of the soul of Joe and for the success of our young athlete.

Dear Father Finigan
Thanks for this post and your prayer requests for both Joe and Michael.
Team GB came third last weekend in the Europa Cup competition, but the management of the team particularly in the relays was diabolical, and the funding situation for athletes is dire. Michael said that "Stuart Stokes' comment really summed up the way a lot of athletes feel, and that his mate Colin had a good run in the 800m".
Professional footballers really don't know how lucky they are, and I would ask your readers to say a prayer for all our athletes preparing for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Dear Father Finigan
Last Sunday Michael sent me some very informative texts, and they arrived quite appropriately when I was attending The Eagle Document: The Collection of Enumerated Things a Private View at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, University of Greenwich, Queen Anne Court, Old Royal Naval College, Park Row, London SE10.
Former Bexley Athletic Club star Lorraine Ugen's decision to leave BAC after the massive row she had with BAC coaching staff, was vindicated when she won the U20 AAA's long jump and achieved the qualifying distance for the European Junior Championships.
Michael's friend from St Mary's University College, Twickenham, TEAM GB'S Amir is now providing professional coaching services to BAC, and hopefully he will better address the issues and concerns of BAC's contemporary group of talented black athletes led by Farren Morgan.
If the problems are not addressed, I fear talent will continue to be lost to other athletic clubs, or worse, from the sport altogether.

Dear Father Finigan
Michael has submitted his latest blog to the BBC and it should be updated soon.
Yesterday saw the unveiling of the 7/7 bombing memorial in Hyde Park http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1198010/July-7th-memorial-Prince-Charles-joins-relatives-7-7-bombings-unveils-Hyde-Park-monument.html
Eddie Nestor hosts Drive Time on BBC Radio London 94.9 between 5 and 7pm, and during yesterday's show the following text was read out to London and the World:
"The day after London's successful Olympic bid for 2012 was announced, my son Michael and the London Schools Athletic Team were due to meet at King's Cross Station in the morning to travel to Birmingham for the English Schools Championships. None of the children were injured in the 7/7 bomb blasts, a 'miracle'. Michael my son ran his first 800m race in Birmingham wearing a black armband".
