Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.
I roared with laughter at this photo which Laurence "Bones" England published yesterday. You should also read his post which makes a serious point: New Guidelines on Assisted Suicide?
"The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine." (Catechism 2290)
So one should not abuse tobacco or use it to excess. It might be argued today that any use of tobacco is excessive but I'm not sure about that. And there have been many saints who smoked or used snuff: St John Kemble, Bl Pius IX, St Pius X, St Titus Brandsma, St Piergiorgio Frassati...
But I don't want to encourage anyone to smoke. For anyone who does, I agree that it would be a good thing to give it up.
Yes but ALL tobacco IS harmful! I have 2 silly girls who have a 'few' fags each day. waste of money & health. I don't nor ever have taken any alcoholic products..a lifetime Pioneer Total abstinence..but i know the occasional drink for others is NOT harmful. Smoking is different. Perhaps the saints you mention had their weaknesses too or didn't know the dire consequences of smoking. I think it borders on sinful myself..abusing one's lungs. My MIL recently died of lung cancer..
Yes. Try confronting 32 Militant atheists twice a week on the subject. Thank God for his armour of Ephesians. We love it.
Some of us, Catholic teachers from around the UK and further, have started our own support groups around the UK. Thank-you to the Catholic blogosphere which has supported us.
Tobacco has become the "demon rum" of the modern day which is annoying for those of us who enjoy the occasional pipe or fine cigar. It also goes a long way toward the theory that progressivism is really Puritanism minus the Triune God.
Tobacco smoking is an addiction. It is very hard to stop. It is especially hard for those in humdrum, stressful, attention needing jobs where there is little free time, like mine.
I would never wish tobacco addiction on anyone, the best cure being to never start.
Bravo to those super people who successfully give up. I am not one of them.
I am as ready to accept the Cross as any of you, even if it includes tobacco withdrawal, and painful death by tobacco related disease.
Those martinets who crow over their addiction free lifestyle, will die of something else for sure. Crow on.
We live benighted by sin in a benighted world. Grant some of us our consolations, Lord.

Is smoking suicidal? I would say that standing outside a pub for a smoke on a winter's evening is certainly perilous to one's health..
And I'll bet she's a good Irish granny!
Don't forget J.R.R Tolkien, Father! He smoked a pipe daily, and one day I hope he is declared Servus Dei at least!

I gave up my pipe last year and now take the occasional pinch of snuff.
I'm now waiting for the health commissars to condemn "passive snuffing" and make me take it outside!

Bless you, and God love you.
