Will governments ever realise that weak and dysfunctional families lead to an unstable country.

On 'family edge' today there is a report showing

'British family researchers seem to be working overtime to keep up with trends that have won the UK the label, Breakdown Britain. A new report from the relationship support organisation One Plus One reviews the evidence on the effects of marital or partnership breakdown on the wellbeing of both adults and children. It finds a definite negative impact and argues that better interventions to support parents could prevent some family ruptures'.

Some pretty obvious findings:

Couple relationship breakdown is strongly associated with adult and child disadvantage. In the years prior to and following a split physical and psychological health of adults worsen.

Couple relationships - if they are of sufficient quality offer protection to partners in terms of social support, companionship and intimacy – especially for men. Between the ages of 30 and 50 single men have death rates about three times those of married men (for single women the ratio is double).

Understanding the impact on adults gives us additional insight into the impact on parents. Distressed parents are distracted parents; preoccupied with their own troubles, they are less attuned to their children’s needs and may be inconsistent and ineffective..........

“The relationship between parents is at the heart of family functioning and may be the primary determinant of children’s emotional and behavioural wellbeing.”

Why do we not have the above written on our buses (instead of Calvin Klein pornography) and played on our radios (instead of morning after pill and condom promotions).
