There is an excellent letter in the Catholic Herald by Christopher Koe who points out that the motion "Is the Church a force for good?" was also debated at the university in Paris in the early 1830s, it was defeated, but the occasion led to Frederick Ozanam founding the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

Fr. Tim,
I have posted a link to these letters. I also write about a similar debate in New York (2007), sponsored by the Economist Magazine in which my late mentor and friend, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus bested those who spoke against the role of religion in politics. Here is a link to an abridged version of a television piece that was inspired by that debate.

No one that I have ever met could match him in making the argument for the faith. I believe you and the readers of your blog would appreciate his wisdom.

Thanks for the link, great to know! I just saw the debate on BBC in Finland today and was terrified at the outcome. This at least is evidence God uses bad to bring good from it.
