Weigel says that Küng's letter:
[...] set new standards for that distinctive form of hatred known as odium theologicum and for mean-spirited condemnation of an old friend who had, on his rise to the papacy, been generous to you while encouraging aspects of your current work.He also rebuts Küng's charges competently one by one and calls upon him to apologise.

Kung has been on the wrong side for decades. He clashed with de Lubac on what the Pope subsequently called the hermeneutic of continuity in the 1960s.
Thanks once again for bringing to light evidence that the Pope is not the Satanic, paedophile defender which the anti-Catholic media paints him out to be. I would be interested in your opinion on my critique of the Problem of Evil: http://the-marquise.blogspot.com/2010/04/problem-of-evil.html
Everything Küng thinks the Pope has done wrong is a testimony that he has in fact done those things right, for Küng clearly is not faithful to the Magisterium.
Call this a hunch, but seems to me that Kung has been caught by the Green-Eyed Monster...
A great and charitable piece by George Weigel. Küng definitely needs our prayers.
When I was in seminary, we had a very humble yet brilliant Italian priest, Fr. Ferrando Minnogio who taught philosophy at our Cleveland, OH seminary.
He recalled an encounter with Kung. Fr. Minnogio informed Kung of the evening function which was the cause for his visit to the university. Kung replied,"It is a shame you shall miss my lecture" Minnogio responded, "You presume I want to attend your lecture!"
Priceless!!!!!
