Horse trying to find mum in Tesco

A good, honest, harmless and absolutely hilarious prank. Kudos to the youngsters who thought this one up and carried it off.

(By way of explanation: it was recently discovered by DNA testing that some economy burgers in Tesco and some other stores were contaminated with horsemeat. Lots of coverage in the UK and Irish press.)

Young people do silly things sometimes, carried away by their enthusiasm and innocence. Adults should exercise patience and moderation and give guidance: we should not congratulate them. Sorry Father, but I think you are way off target here.

Was it protesting at the horsemeat burgers sold at Tesco's recently?

Yes - should have made that clear, I suppose.

tempus putationis - I stand by the post. We often have to correct young people for doing things that are dangerous, thoughtless or harmful to others. One common issue is to point out that just because something is funny, it is not necessarily harmless.

In this case, the prank was a genuinely funny comment on the issue of burgers being contaminated with horsemeat. Nobody was harmed or humiliated.

In such cases, I think that older people can give a good example of legitimate indulgence, encouraging intelligent and harmless fun as an outlet for youthful exuberance.

In this regard, I would take as examples St Philip Neri and St John Bosco.

I agree with Fr Tims reply to Tempus. The saints had a great sense of humour. These young people highlighted in a funny way the deceit of mixing horse meat with beef. A shocking deception was portrayed to us in a humorous way. No one was humiliated or hurt by the manifestation of other people's deception of things.
