Sr Roseann does us proud

Image
Sr Roseann Reddy of the Sisters of the Gospel of Life last night defended the Church in a head-to-head with atheist Ross Wright. You can listen on BBC iPlayer (about 36'15" to 41'0"). Best line: "Lady Gaga will not give you the meaning to life"

Latest secularist whinge: Pope condemns atheism

Image
Earlier today, we witnessed the extraordinary spectacle of a German who had been dragooned into the Hitler Youth and then conscripted into the army, visiting Britain as Pope, and praising our country for standing up to Nazism. He also spoke of how atheist extremists give us sobering lessons and how the exclusion of God from public life adversely affects how we view the human person. Yes, the Pope is indeed a Catholic. Here is the relevant text: Even in our own lifetime, we can recall how Britain and her leaders stood against a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society and denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews, who were thought unfit to live. I also recall the regime's attitude to Christian pastors and religious who spoke the truth in love, opposed the Nazis and paid for that opposition with their lives. As we reflect on the sobering lessons of the atheist extremism of the 20th century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and vir...

How very BBC

Image
An internal BBC email sent to me today. The BBC are hosting a staff discussion on Christianity. Who do they get to do it? A history professor and campaigner for gay rights who describes his own current religious position as that of an agnostic or atheist with a background in Anglicanism, and a Muslim academic who writes for the Tablet. As my correspondent comments, "How very BBC." From:  Internal Communications Scotland Sent:  14 May 2010 09:32 Subject:  A Conversation with Diarmaid MacCulloch: Pacific Quay, Monday 17 May, 5.45PM - 7.15PM A Conversation with Diarmaid MacCulloch: Pacific Quay, Monday 17 May, 5.45PM - 7.15PM On Monday (17th May) we will be marking the 80th anniversary of our Scottish Religious Advisory Committee (SRAC) with an event on the 3rd Floor of Pacific Quay. "desperate and discombobulated secularism"

Image
Brendan O'Neill, the atheistic libertarian, attacks the ludicrous campaign to have the Pope arrested in his article " The Secular Inquisition " in Spiked, of which he is the editor. It is a fun piece in which he talks a lot of sense. [...] despite the lack of any obvious, sensible reason why they break out in boils at the mention of the words ‘Benedict’, ‘priest’ or ‘Catholic’, the pope-hunters’ campaign has acquired a powerfully pathological, obsessive and deafeningly shrill character.

Losing my religion marbles

Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens are planning to arrest the Pope when he comes to the UK in September. All together now: No, you've HAD your dinner... You've already got your trousers ON... MATRON, take them away!

Atheist warns against Catholic-bashing

Image
Many thanks to a correspondent who sent me the link to an article in which Brendan O'Neill, atheist editor of Spiked , steps aside from the mainstream commentary to say: The reaction to the paedophile priest scandal is as guilty of scaremongering, illiberalism and elitism as the Catholic Church has ever been. I don't agree with everything in the article but he makes some good points about the effects of the "new atheism". See: Why humanists shouldn’t join in this Catholic-bashing

"Is the Church a force for good?"

Image
There is an excellent letter in the Catholic Herald by Christopher Koe who points out that the motion "Is the Church a force for good?" was also debated at the university in Paris in the early 1830s, it was defeated, but the occasion led to Frederick Ozanam founding the Society of St Vincent de Paul .

Atheist T-shirts

Paulinus has some good ideas for atheist T-shirts. Above is #1. you can see the others at these links: #2 #3 #4

The atheist moral high ground

Image
Above is one of the 20 coolest atheist t-shirts . Hmmm. Atheists have carried out various forms of torture and execution in the gulags of the Soviet Union, in North Korea, Cambodia, China, Mexico, and Spain, killing millions of people in the process in the unprecedented slaughters of the 20th century. But maybe they have never stoned anyone. I don't know.

Faith camps and Camp Faithless

Image
One amusing moment at the Faith Summer Session was when Fr Roger Nesbitt mentioned the media coverage given to Camp Faithless, the atheist summer camp for 24 children for which the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science has made a donation of £500 to fund a 'philosophy for children' counsellor. Fr Nesbitt said that he had telephoned the BBC to ask them to cover the Faith Summer Session with over 200 young people and they had responded positively asking when the conference was to be held. He then pointed out in deadpan voice "I'm joking". Neither will the BBC be likely to cover the Youth 2000 event, the Evangelium Conference, the Traditional Catholic Families summer school or the David Foster summer school ... The Camp Faithless anthem is John Lennon's "Imagine" (... there's no heaven etc.) and it boasts that it encourages the children to "ask questions about beliefs". (Actually we do that too.) One game is to ask the children...

Quinn v Dawkins transcript

You can now read the transcript of the David Quinn and Richard Dawkins debate chaired by Ryan Turbidy on RTE Radio in Dublin. It is obviously constrained by the limits of a live radio show but is interesting nonetheless in that David Quinn comes out of it very well. H/T Countercultural Father

Many thanks to Paulinus for this link which, as he says, promises Hours of harmless fun : the Bus slogan generator . Away you go! Here's my offering:

An honest atheist

New Advent has a very useful blog which rounds up stories from all over the place. One source often used is The Anchoress . Yesterday there was this interesting video of Penn Jillette, an American entertainer who is an avowed atheist. He tells of how a good, honest man complimented him and gave him a bible, admitting that he was proselytising. He speaks of his respect for those who proselytise, saying: “How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible, and not tell them that?”

Don Camillo's procession

Bregwin on YouTube sent me this video which cheered me up today. Bregwin links to his site Karamazov: the amorality of atheism which looks interesting.

Don't worry! Be happy!

Image
Some years ago, I remember a "hit" song that my youth group liked called "Don't worry! Be happy!" The fun and lilting caribbean voice made it a popular and amusing invitation to "chill out". The atheist bus adverts promise people a worry-free existence if they will only accept that there is "probably" no God. This is not very reassuring in itself - to be free of worry, you would really need to be certain that there is no God - but let that pass. Who can have a worry-free existence? This was essentially the problem that exercised the Stoics and other ancient philosophers in search of the " Beata vita ", the blessed, or calm and contented life. Seneca and others got close when saying that freedom from fear and desire was the key. An ascetical life would free you from the desire that nags and worries. Acceptance of whatever happens will free you from fear. Without the teaching of Christ, however, this search for the beata vita will be...

We shall fight them on the buses...

Well done Paulinus ( In Hoc Signo Vinces ), for this: (If you didn't get the point, here is an example story .)

Anti-God fantasy failing miserably

Dawkins denies Churchgoing reports

Image
In this forum at the official Richard Dawkins website, the professor himself has flatly denied recent reports of his being seen in Catholic Churches in Oxford. He says: "I do occasionally go into Oxford churches for funerals and weddings. But these are nearly always, of course, Anglican churches. I don't think I've been in a Roman Catholic church (it happened to be St Aloysius) since a funeral in 1999"

Canmore tomorrow

Image
I am off up to Bonnie Scotland tomorrow to visit Canmore , the home of the Catholic Society at the University of St Andrews. I always enjoy my visits to St Andrews because of the particularly vibrant life of the chaplaincy there. I'll be flying Air France to Dundee, then taking the short hop down to the university on the bus. As I have said before, St Andrews is a beautiful place to study and I always find that the students are enjoyable company. This time, my talk is about Richard Dawkins. I'll be looking at "The God Delusion" of course but also at his other works. I feel that it is a great pity that the power and indeed beauty of his scientific writing is marred by his fundamentally irrational prejudice against religion. For the first time, my talk has been featured as an "Event" on Facebook. This opens up a new dimension in communication since not only do I know several of the students from the Faith Conferences but now I can see a list (and photos) of pe...

Defending real atheism

Fr Benedict Groeschel was speaking the other day to the National Courage Conference in Chicago. One funny quote in reference to some of the recent atheist books: "I am deeply insulted that atheism can be so badly represented. I am tempted to write a book defending atheism in response."
