New cellphone

Actually, we call them "mobile phones" in England. The Mulier Fortis told me that mine must be due for an upgrade so the other day, while on my way to pick up my recovered backup hard drive (that's right - the backup failed!) I popped into the T-Mobile shop in Eltham. This is always fun because I am one of their best customers. My SIM card still has "One to One" on it, demonstrating that I have been very loyal (mainly through inertia, actually). Unlike the banking industry, the mobile phone industry rewards such loyalty. I asked whether I was due for an upgrade. Excitedly, "Sylvia", a charming young African lady, said that I was indeed due to get a new phone on special terms. She looked up tariffs, brought out demo phones and took me through all the options until I decided that the MDA Compact IV would be a nice phone to have. So what deal could be done? St Josemaria Escriva said that we are called to the heroism of finishing each particular task. I fail on this in the matter of reading books - there always seem to be half a dozen in progress. My aim is to have just two - one for spiritual reading and one for educational reading. The book for spiritual reading does not have to be finished if it turns out that something else is appropriate. For example, I have recently begun again to read St Therese's "Story of a Soul." At Parkminster today, I explained to the Novice Master that this was my latest enthusiasm. He told me that one of the Fathers had spent decades on the study of St Therese; in doing so he had reached conclusions that went contrary to those of many other scholars of the little flower. This made me chuckle and I certainly want to find out what he has said. Since he is Spanish, this would give me a chance to improve my knowledge of that important language. Saints of Christian Unity

Fr Anthony Ho has an article for Pax Sinaica (scroll down for the English version) in which he looks at St Francis de Sales and Blessed Marie Gabriella ( right ). Concerning St Francis de Sales, Fr Ho makes this observation: St. Francis won the heart of the people gradually with his patience and kindness. The parents would not come to St. Francis, so he came to their children and played with them. When the parents saw how kind he was as he played with their children, they started to talk to him.

Family Day at Blackfen

On Saturday, 13 November, there will be a Family Day at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Blackfen. The theme will be "Angels, Saints and Nations sing 'Praised be Jesus Christ Our King'." We begin at 12noon with prayers during and after Benediction. (There is also Mass (Latin EF) at 10.30am followed by adoration and confessions until noon.) There will then be a 'Shared Table' lunch: bring some food to share if you can. Tea, coffee and squash will be provided. There will be Activities for parents, teenagers and children including catechetical talks as well as fun and games. The Day will finish at 4pm but families are welcome to stay on for 6pm Mass if they wish. Families all welcome. The Family Day is completely child-friendly. If babies or toddlers cry, are sick, feed at the breast, hide under the table or throw their toys out of the pram, nobody will glare or tut.
