Failure to splat the rat

This afternoon, the Union of Catholic Mothers in my parish put on a garden party with scones, jam, cream, home-made cakes and sandwiches, tea, pimms, and chilled white wine. There were various activities for the children and I had at go at the "Splat the Rat" game at which I was a miserable failure. They still gave me a lollipop as a consolation prize.

Here is the accompanying text: This was taken at the baptism of Valentino Mora, son of Erica, a single mom of 21 who asked the photographer to take a picture of her son for free. The photo of the baptism of Valentino Mora is sweeping the Internet, because at the time the priest pours the Holy water over his head, the water flows in the shape of a rosary. This story began at the Parish of the Assumption of Our Lady in Cordova, Spain, where the baptism of a one month baby took place. At the time that Valentino came to the baptismal font for the sacrament of baptism, Erica asked the photographer Maria Silvana Salles, who was hired by other parents baptizing their babies, to take a photo of her son as a favor, since the young mother had no way of paying for it. The eternal truths and the threefold remorse of the damned

St Alphonsus Liguori used to quote St Augustine "God promises us His grace, He does not promise us tomorrow." At this time of year I devote four Sunday sermons to the four last things. It is easy to gloss over the eternal truths even though they are an obviously major part of the teaching of Jesus Christ in the gospels. Comment on media coverage - and congratulations to "Bones"

It is not a very enjoyable task to trawl through the media and comment on the mean-minded coverage that too often manifests itself. Thanks therefore to Gregory in the combox for doing this little job for me in his comment on last night's summary post: Yes, an absolute success so far. Big plus especially to Sky News (credit where due and all that...maybe that Papal Knight to Rupert was well considered after all!) for its rolling, generally balanced, coverage - especially from Colin Brazier and Anna Botting. Big minus to the Guardian's front page today which, even for it, has plumbed new depths of bile. I must say, as wizened as I am to the Grauniad's nasty antics it even surprised me. Quite the most unctuous headline (no-one does unctuousness - a criticism often aimed at the Church - better than scorned atheists).
