Where I will be tomorrow

In case I don't get time later on, I thought I had better do a WIWBT post. Tomorrow, I will be travelling up to St Andrew's University in Scotland, to speak to the Catholic Society at its home "Canmore". I expect to meet one or two other bloggers and to view some spectacularly creative liturgy from the students after a few drinks afterwards.

It is quite a long journey. The AA says it is 475 miles from me and would take 8 hours and 34 minutes to drive. Needless to say, I will not be driving as it is only an overnight trip. More about the journey in another post.

This trip, I will be speaking on "The Church: Man's living link with God". On previous visits over the years, I have had some more testing assignments. Many years ago, I was invited to debate the question of women priests with a priest from the Columban Fathers. Ten years ago, terrifyingly, I was invited to give a talk on St Andrew. I will post some notes from that talk later.

St Andrews is a beautiful place to study. Scotland is just that little bit less secular and pagan than England, and St Andrews has all the charm of Oxford and Cambridge in a more isolated location and with a closer-knit community. I am really looking forward to seeing the present generation of students who sound like a whole lot of fun. I'll be taking my big camera. Here is an idea of the kind of place it is: "The Scores", the home of Canmore overlooking the sea and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club.

Saint Gabriel

The angels call for our veneration and awe as part of God’s creation. Part of the destructive modernism of the 1970s included advice to Catholic school teachers that they should not talk to children about angels. This wrought lasting damage which continues to need rectifying. We should include in our prayers a heartfelt recourse to our own Guardian Angels. The Archangel Gabriel “God is my strength” would be terrifying were he to appear to any of us. Our Lady was “troubled” at the word of Saint Gabriel and wondered at the manner of the salutation. Immediately, according to his mission, the awesome messenger explained himself. Modern retelling of the event is often reduced to the jejune “Mary said Yes to God”. In fact, she said “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word”. This conveys more accurately the flawless faith and trust of the Immaculata. Novena in honour of Bl Pius IX for seminarian

The Overbrook Seminary of Philadelphia began yesterday a novena in honor of Blessed Pius IX that God might be glorified through the illness of a second year seminarian, Philip Gerard Johnson. Philip has helped at Lourdes for many years as a day pilgrim guide as one of those guiding the torchlight Rosary Procession throughout these Summers. He blogs at In Caritate non Ficta . Rogationtide and the Prayer of Petition

Rogationtide is traditionally a time of prayer in preparation for the Ascension; England was one of the earliest countries to spread the custom. In Rome, fasting but not abstinence was observed, a concession to the continuing joy of Easter. Challoner mentions abstinence in the 1775 edition of his Garden of the Soul, but it had gone by the 1872 edition. Guéranger lamented that the Rogation days were so little noticed. At the very least, this time reminds us that it is always a good idea to pray and do some penance before great feasts. The prayer of this Rogationtide emphasises our need to implore the forgiveness of our sins, protection from calamities such as pestilence, and a bountiful harvest. We therefore keep in our hearts not only the needs that we have ourselves, but also the welfare of all those among whom we live.
