Blessed John Paul II on freedom

It is good to hear from Andrew at Unam Sanctam after a bit of a break from blogging. He came up out of the blue with this quotation from Blessed John Paul II's homily at Orioles Park in Camden Yards USA in October 1995:
Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.
That should be posted up in every sixth form philosophy classroom.

Dear Fr. Tim, thank you for your mention. I did think that the quote was appropriate in our age where there's such a distortion in the meaning of freedom to the detriment of our Christian witness and ability to do what our faith and conscience dictates.

I find the progression in many Western countries very alarming. From same-sex equality, it has been turned into something mandatory and all other opinions have become hate speech. Alarming indeed.

God bless you, Father.
