Hilary has tagged me for a meme . Let me say that I do not usually do these because it is enough trying to keep up the blog anyway, but looking at this one I immediately felt a rant coming on ... The meme is: Top-Five Critically-Lauded Movies I Simply Detest OK so here we go - off the top of my head: Four Weddings and a Funeral Nasty denigration of marriage and light-hearted celebration of vicious and cynical adultery. A film that I switched off half way through. I imagine its follow-up "Love Actually" is as bad. I'll not be ordering that one for rental. (As Sir Dan once commented: "Fornication Actually.") Angela's Ashes Mis-lit for the big screen. People from Limerick pointed out to me that it actually doesn't rain there every day. Corpus Christi Sunday on Saturday

Following from Ascension Thursday Sunday, this weekend we have to celebrate Corpus Christi Sunday. I'm sorry but this does make me a bit grumpy. The party line is that if we celebrate this great feast on a Sunday, we can reach out to more people because they won't come if it is celebrated on a Thursday. Of course I am preaching this weekend about the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, about the proper dispositions for Holy Communion, and the importance of Eucharistic Adoration. But I do that quite often anyway. Corpus Christi offered us an additional opportunity to witness to this mystery. The only people who are really affected by the change are the practising Catholics who take the trouble to come to Mass on the Holydays. It is also annoying that we are consulted about all sorts of things but this decision was rushed through breathlessly as soon as the Catholic Herald announced that there would be some significant opposition to it. I got stung!

I just paid my car tax using the all new direc-gov website to make it easier for Gordon Brown to rob us electronically. 12 months road tax on my Nissan Primera cost me £190. Ouch! Entering it in my accounts, I see that last year it cost £155. That's an increase of 22.5%. To put you in the picture if you live in America, £190 is $372 at today's exchange rate. The road tax is just to keep the car legally on the road - insurance, tax on petrol, tax on the cost of the car are all extra to this. (BTW - how much is a litre of ordinary unleaded petrol (sorry - "gas") in the US?)

This photo is doing the rounds at the moment. Here is the accompanying text: This was taken at the baptism of Valentino Mora, son of Erica, a single mom of 21 who asked the photographer to take a picture of her son for free. The photo of the baptism of Valentino Mora is sweeping the Internet, because at the time the priest pours the Holy water over his head, the water flows in the shape of a rosary. This story began at the Parish of the Assumption of Our Lady in Cordova, Spain, where the baptism of a one month baby took place. At the time that Valentino came to the baptismal font for the sacrament of baptism, Erica asked the photographer Maria Silvana Salles, who was hired by other parents baptizing their babies, to take a photo of her son as a favor, since the young mother had no way of paying for it. The angels call for our veneration and awe as part of God’s creation. Part of the destructive modernism of the 1970s included advice to Catholic school teachers that they should not talk to children about angels. This wrought lasting damage which continues to need rectifying. We should include in our prayers a heartfelt recourse to our own Guardian Angels. The Archangel Gabriel “God is my strength” would be terrifying were he to appear to any of us. Our Lady was “troubled” at the word of Saint Gabriel and wondered at the manner of the salutation. Immediately, according to his mission, the awesome messenger explained himself. Modern retelling of the event is often reduced to the jejune “Mary said Yes to God”. In fact, she said “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word”. This conveys more accurately the flawless faith and trust of the Immaculata. Saints of Christian Unity

Fr Anthony Ho has an article for Pax Sinaica (scroll down for the English version) in which he looks at St Francis de Sales and Blessed Marie Gabriella ( right ). Concerning St Francis de Sales, Fr Ho makes this observation: St. Francis won the heart of the people gradually with his patience and kindness. The parents would not come to St. Francis, so he came to their children and played with them. When the parents saw how kind he was as he played with their children, they started to talk to him.
