50 Extraordinary Churches

I don't like all of them but this is an amazing photo collection of striking edifices built forth glory of God: 50 Most Extraordinary Churches of the World The above image is of Las Lajas Cathedral which was built in 1916 inside the canyon of the Guaitara river where, according to local legend, the Virgin Mary appeared.

I think in saying you don't like some of them Father, you're being rather polite. Some of them are hideous. How could they possibly glorify God? They certainly aren't extraordinary form churches, that's for sure. . .

I think I'd be willing to say that most of them are down right awful!

The image of Our Lady and the Child Jesus is on the rock face over which this basilica is built. There is no scientific or geological explanation of how this beautiful Our Lady of the Rocks,( Las lajas), came to exist. An indian mother and her child found it in the 1600s when the child came running out of the cave in fright at the sight of a woman. No need to rely on local legend,- the image is there on the rock, like Guadalupe defying explanation. One example of the Faith in Columbia, a country that with it's strongly catholic president is now menaced by the neo communist Chavez of Venezuela. Please pray for Columbia.( Google Las Lajas to see this beautiful image of Our Lady)

Went to Ronchamp on Saturday - very impressive.

I'm sure Blackfen could come up with a better Church Birdhouse than that!

I have attended Divine Liturgy at St. Joseph Ukranian Catholic Church (number 7 on the list) when visiting Chicago. I'm a Latin Rite Catholic, but St. Joseph's is a short walk from where my father-in-law used to live. Although the exterior looks like something from the cover of a sci-fi paperback, the interior is lovely. The article has a link to a Wiki article about this parish, which is quite interesting.
