Lucy Speed and "Fight for Sight"

A parishioner of mine has a son who suffers with Choroideremia, a rare inherited disorder that causes progressive loss of vision due to degeneration of the choroid and retina. She and a friend are doing a half marathon for charity this Sunday to raise money for "Fight for Sight". Last week they took up a bucket collection after Mass to get some support from the parishioners. Above you can see a photo from the FFS website from a previous run.

There is also good news this week for the charity in that Lucy Speed (who appears in "The Bill") will be on Family Fortunes this Sunday at 6.45pm and Fight for Sight is one of her charities. the maximum prize money is apparently £30,000 so I hope she does well.

Dear Father Finigan

The relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux will be visiting 28 venues including Wormwood Scrubs. Do you know the date for the HMP visit?

This morning I took Holy Communion at Our Lady of the Angels here in the London Borough of Bexley where you are the RC Dean.

After this morning's Mass for Our Lady Walsingham www.kentcountyfootballleague.co.uk.

Cliff Hardcastle's Old Addeyans FC are no longer playing in the league but I notice that Charlton Athletic Community FC now are.

As a former 1st XI captain of Old Addeyans FC, I consciously chose to go to prison as a true HEART 'n' SOUL SURVIVOR'S protest against NF/BNP neo-Nazi entry-ism into London's Sporting/Planning Arena at the Old Addeyans FC/Densitron International plc development in the 1990/91 football season.

Our Lady of Walsingham pray for a true vision of Britain!

Father, The majority of medical charities belong to the AMRC and as such support and may carry out embryonic stem cell research, this charity is no exception. I feel very troubled when asked to donate to such charities, is this wrong?

I hope I don't sound unreasonable, but, like Steve, I'm afraid to say that alarm bells immediately ring when I see the word "research" in practically any charity's name these days. This might be unfounded scepticism in some cases.

A quick search on the Fight for Sight website indicates that in October 2008, the charity sponsored a conference at which Dr Marcelo Rivolta where he talks about "techniques to coerce human embryonic stem cells and bone marrow stem cells into auditory cell types". The fact that his title is 'Research Fellow at the Centre for Stem Cell Biology, University of Sheffield' also results in further alarm bells for me, having been the president of the Pro-Life Society from 2004-6 at the university and knowing full well as to what this department actually does.

However, it doesn't seem from the search that the charity supports the avenue of destructive embryonic stem cell research.
