Thorny problem for the UN

Well I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. The President of the General Assembly of the United Nations is elected on a regional rotating basis and this year it is the turn of the African group of states. The new President is Ali Abdussalam Treki of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Libya's Minister of African Affairs and the African Union's Envoy to Darfur.

One of the journalists at a press conference prior to the opening of the 64th session of the General Assembly asked Treki what he thought of the UN's Declaration for the Universal Decriminalisation of Homosexuality. According to the quote in Pink News, he said:
"That matter is very sensitive, very touchy. As a Muslim, I am not in favour of it ... it is not accepted by the majority of countries. My opinion is not in favour of this matter at all. I think it's not really acceptable by our religion, our tradition.

“It is not acceptable in the majority of the world. And there are some countries that allow that, thinking it is a kind of democracy ... I think it is not.”

I think a clear distinction needs to made between intolerance of and criminalization of homosexuality. A state can be intolerant and take a discouraging attitude towards homosexual practice, but decriminalize this behaviour for practical considerations.

I am personally intolerant of homosexual practise; that is, I believe it to be repugnant, unnatural, contrary to natural selection, in contradiction to natural law, and juxtaposed to the traditional family - which has been the bedrock of Western society.

Do I believe that homosexual acts should be criminalized? No. Why? The liberal nature of democracies necessitate that it is unfair to investigate one individual's sexuality on the basis of suspicions and not others'. (Is it really fair to expect the state to police the bedrooms of the nation? This is quite an onerous task indeed!)If it were so, I am certain that David and Jonathan would be the first on the list of suspects.

I think the new president needs to make a clear distinction - a dichotomy - between what should be criminalized , and what is detrimental .

The nature of sexual acts is that of privacy. Adam and Steve can do whatever they want in their bedrooms, but are they criminals? Let their creator decide.

This is why I've never understood the gay activists who don kaffiyehs and march against Israel on behalf of the Palestinian regime. If they ever fell into the hands of the guys whose side they're taking, they'd be some of the first to be stood up against a wall.

Although I believe that homosexual activity is fundamentally wrong I do not think it should be criminalised. I feel the same way about adultery.

Dear Father Finigan

If the UN succeeds in this resolution decriminalising homosexuality will all the countries where it is a criminal offence, including Mr Treki's be suspended from the UN?

Labour's Ben Bradshaw 'Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport' and his civil partner Neal Dalgleish, who is a BBC producer, may both want to ask the UN this question before the end of the Party's conference in Brighton.

Perhaps with this guy in charge of the UN they won't be so ready to shove homosex down our throats at every opportunity.

Perhaps they can now get on with some 'REAL' business to make the world a better place rather than concentrate on politically correct garbage!

Perhaps with Mr Treki in charge, our Muslim brothers and sisters can show some solidarity with the Pro-Life movement and help us give the UN a real 'hard time' for all their murderous abortion campaigns under the thin guise of 'women's health', their 'condomania' and their so-called children's charities which dismally fail on all counts etc...

Perhaps Mr Treki will listen to REAL Science and Scientists on the issue of anthropogenic global warming and all this 'CO2 is a catastrophic problem' non-sense!

Reminds me of the old Doris Day 50's or 60's song "Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps...."
