Would you buy a used car from these people?

A doctor in my parish made a good point to me after Mass today related to the debate on condom use and HIV. Suppose you were offered an investigative procedure with a 1% chance it would kill you. Would you opt for it? Would you recommend it for your "pardner"?

The Family Planning Association website says of the effectiveness of condoms: "98% effective if used according to instructions. 2 women in 100 will get pregnant in a year." (That's fairly damning since a proportion of women will not get pregnant in a year even without using contraception.)

I've got a car for sale. Only one in fifty chance the brakes will fail. Buy it for your wife?
