Adult stem cell successes
Thanks to SPUC News, I read this article from the Canadian broadcaster CTV: Adult stem cell studies far ahead of embryonic research. It tells of many possible treatments and fruitful areas of research that have been developed using adult stem cells:
The article gives a number of examples of treatments which have saved tens of thousands of lives each year using the ethical process of extracting adult stem cells from bone marrow or from the bloodstream.
For all the emotional debate that began about a decade ago to allow the use of embryonic stem cells, it is adult stem cells that are in human testing today. An extensive review of stem cell projects and interviews with two dozen experts reveal a wide range of potential treatments. We would say, of course, that the debate is not simply a matter of emotion but of the evil of experimenting on human embryos and destroying them in the interests of research. Still, the debate is often emotional as well, and it is good to be "in the loop" when information such as this is published.
