Poll on assisted suicide

Lord Joffe, who has campaigned strenuously for the legalisation of assisted suicide, is giving a public lecture at Bath University to promote his views. The University wishes the public to have their say in a poll on their website.

It is a good, straightforward question "Should assisted dying be legalised for the terminally ill?" Currently there is a massive majority of "No" votes - go over to help keep it that way.

Cast your vote here.

Father, if you were to paste the url instead of a link, people could paste it into their browsers instead of clicking through. This makes it a wee bit less obvious that a crowd of people have come from a Mad Fundamentalist Right-wing Catholic site :-)

Father
I've cast my vote as I was alerted by Care not Killing.

Christian Order produced a news item from the New York Times of October 7th 1933 which reports:

'The Ministry of Justice in a detailed memorandum explaining the Nazi aims regarding the German penal code, today announced its intention to authorize physicians to end the sufferings of incurable patients.

The memorandum, still lacking the force of law, proposed that "it shall be made possible for physicians to end the tortures of incurable patients, upon request, in the interests of true humanity."

This proposed legal recognition of euthanasia - the act of providing painless and peaceful death - raised a number of fundamental problems of a religious, scientific and legal nature. The Catholic newspaper Germania hastened to observe:

The Catholic faith binds the conscience of its followers not to accept this method of shortening the suffering of incurables who are tormented by pain.'

The news item goes on to report that the Nazis insist that euthanasia shall be permissible only if the accredited attending physician is backed by two experts who so advise. Also either the patient himself shall "expressly and earnestly" ask it, or "in case the patient no longer is able to express his desire, his nearer relatives, acting from motives that do not contravene morals so request"

I do not understand this man Joffe. He is Jewish, yet he advocates something that was enthusiastically taken up by the Nazis.

Christian Order entitles the News Item 'The Slippery slope to Hell' and comments that to ignore the lessons of history is to repeat its mistakes.

Quite so.

Always makes me laugh because whenever this tired old 'assisted suicide' drivel is wheeled out of that dusty closet and peddled to the news hungry media it's invariably by someone who is a bit 'on' in years like this Lord Joffe and should know better!

His little menagerie of like-minded weirdos includes the likes of Dr 'Death' Jack Kevorkian, Mary Baroness 'Pensioners have a Duty to Die' Warnock, Dr Philip 'Suicide Workshops' Nitschke, et al.

Perhaps they might like to reflect on the glaring fact that it will not be too long before they may require the loving care (if they don't have and hide that privilege already) of nursing staff to ease their aches and pains which are the 'crosses' that the elderly and others who are terminally ill invariably carry.

However if their 'Nutty Bills' get into the legislature, the likes of the Macmillan nurses and other Health-CARE professionals who do such incredibly wonderful work in our hospices, hospitals as well as visiting homes, may simply not be around anymore. OR will these 'death peddlars' immediately reach for the 'Hemlock Cup' on their bedside cabinet the moment they feel a twinge coming on?

Come on Lord Joffe - 'what's good for the goose....' as they say...!
