Pontifical Mass at the Lateran Basilica

Just a quick post after today's magnificent celebration of Pontifical Mass at the Basilica of St John Lateran, celebrated by Cardinal Canizares Llovera. I had the great honour of being subdeacon for the Mass. There will be some pictures fairly soon so I hope to be able to share those with you tomorrow.

NLM has the text of Mgr Guido Marini's talk from yesterday: Introduction to the Spirit of the Liturgy. They also have photos from the Mass with Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos in the ordinary form at Santa Maria in Trastevere (including the above).

Tomorrow morning, we have Mass (ordinary form) with Archbishop Raymobnd Burke in St Peter's Basilica, followed by a trip out to Bagno Regio, the birthplace of St Bonaventure.

Father, you are indeed a blest and lucky priest to serve as sub deacon at so splendid a mass. I hope you put in some weight training beforehand because I believe acting as sub deacon at a high vetus ordo mass can put a real strain on one's arm muscles!

Looks wonderful, Father, what a glorious cathedral! I hope you enjoyed the Mass.

Just how tall in Cardinal Canizares? Looking at him seated at the throne reminded me of Ronnie Corbett doing one of his "And the producer said to me.." segments!

Such a beautiful place! I’m also fond of it b/c of what happened there for the Venerable John Henry Newman:
***
Saturday 29 May 1847
St John and I ordained Deacons in St John Lateran (*by Cardinal Vicar*) -- from 6 to 12 from going to returning
***
Letters and Diaries of JHN XII, p. 84.

Mgr Marini's words are brilliantly put together, nuanced, and quite simply dynamite - but of course it would not be appropriate to discuss it in a comment box on a clerical blog.

I hope Damian T leaves off criticising Fr Z's purple pasta and devotes his talents to interpreting its implications in print.
