SSPX advice on the sales

A notice that I saw in the porch of St Nicolas du Chardonnet (my translation):
The season of the sales is a good time to make sensible and economical purchases.

Ladies who, for praiseworthy motives of thrift, have kept skirts from their childhood, might profit from the sales to obtain, at a good price, clothes corresponding to their adult measurements.

In other words, the dress of majorettes is not welcome at Saint-Nicolas; which is not to say that they should dress as men ...

Women wearing trousers in church was something Tolkien complained of in the '60s...

What splendidly Parisian - and appropriate - advice !

Is this basically a very fancy, SSPX way of saying something along the lines of "WOMEN: NO MINISKIRTS! PANTS ARE OUT TOO!"?

I still don't understand what certain "traditionalist" persons have against women wearing pants. I have seen women in far more scandalous skirts than in pants; just about as much as women in scandalous pants. What gives?

C'est magnifique, and apropos.

If you don't understand it Mark then you should be thankful for that.

Mark, I would suggest you read Alice Von Hildebrand's The Dignity of Being a Woman, or Colleen Hammond's book Dressing With Dignity. (I think that Von Hildebrand's book is a must read for husbands and men who are engaged to be married as well as for women!)

These two books will give you an acute insight into this issue, and why it is so important to traditional Catholic women and their husbands. As you will discover this isn't so much about "scandalous" attire, but about attire that highlights the dignity of the woman and her unique vocation.

I would even go so far as to say that in addition to preserving the Traditional Latin Mass, traditional Catholic groups have are one of the last bastions of Western society that has preserved the dignity of women.

I was at Mass and Adoration yesterday morning, arrived slightly late, so sat at the back. I couldn't help noticing that out of 9 women there, only one was wearing a skirt,(me!) (It was a NO so I easily got distracted, mea culpa) I also couldn't help noticing how ugly all those rather large behinds were in trousers, and thought, "Why have women lost the sense of how to dress in public - especially at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass".
It is ridiculous to say there are far more scandalous skirts than trousers - yes, any immodest skirt is bad, and should be condemned, but nearly all trousers are immodest, as they show off the "form" of a woman's body, which (as one Pope taught, I think Pius 12th?) is not something that Catholic women should do. It is there for her husband alone to see (and if she ain't married, then for God alone to see) not to be paraded in public. If a woman MUST wear trousers, then she SHOULD wear a tunic top (or coat) long enough to cover her nether regions - not hard to work out, is it? If she wears a skirt, or dress, it should be loose enough to not show off the form of her body over much. Why do so few "pious" Catholic women not look to Mary as an example and see - she doesn't show herself off, she covers up what is sacred, and should remain hidden from the sight of men... We are supposed to emulate the Saints, not the ridiculous fashionistas of the Godless and immoral society we live in.

Why pick on women? What about men in baseball caps or sleeveless T-shirts or shorts? Or all three?

Elizabeth: You sound like one of my primary school teachers in the 60s

Elizabeth said...

Crux,
I'll take that as a compliment; isn't it a shame those primary school teachers have died out then?
It's not a case of 'picking on' women, I'm sure they would put up a notice telling men not to turn up in baseball caps, shorts, etc., but presumably they're not having a problem with that in their chapel. I agree that there are plenty of immodestly dressed men, the call to sanctity applies to both sexes.

You employ false logic:

Women can wear pants because short skirts are immodest. Is that the best you can do?

The fact is modest skirts & dresses are available in the fashion centre of the world.

I would also like to recommend Alice von Hildebrand's excellent advice.

Thankfully, some priests are still sensible & Catholic enough to insist on modesty of apparel.

LeonG said...

Indeed, modesty applies to men also - shorts, T-shirts and singlets are absolutely unacceptable. If you come to SE Asia you will see frequently that men dress so inappropriately because most NO presbyters here say nothing & do nothing about it. Many women dress as though they want to be desired by men. Some of my buddhist & mohamaten colleagues express their astonishment that people can be allowed to enter an alleged holy place immodestly attired. I can only agree with them: it is shocking to the soul.

I am sorry if I came across as confrontational, but I asure you I was not. I was merely expressing a question I have. I would appreciate it too if you did not address people with guns ablazing either, and consider also that perhaps people are ignorant of certain subjects and wish to be informed and are not trying to get your goat.

I have learned three things from this thread:

1. All fat male backsides in pants are attractive and pleasing to God, but all fat female backsides in pants are not. Magically, fat female backsides in skirts become attractive, not at all looking like unsupported saddlebags.

No word on fat men wearing the kilt. No word on fat women wearing male sarongs, either.

2. Not only are people in this thread more Catholic than the pope, they are more Catholic than the Pope's advice to the Bulgar women.

3. Some people spend a lot of time in church looking at other people's backsides instead of praying. But this counts as custody of the eyes as long as you're just doing it to criticize.

Crux Fidelis said...

Elizabeth: It wasn't intended thus. A lot of these well-intentioned but misguided people saw evil and immodesty where none existed. As others have said: When at church you shouldn't be looking at backsides.
