Catholic Herald beatification live blog

If, like me, you are busy doing other things this morning and cannot watch the coverage of the beatification of Pope John Paul II live on the internet, you can catch up from time to time on the Catholic Herald's Live Blog.

I'd probably excuse you even looking at your smartphone during the sermon provided you know how to turn all sound notifications off, and provided you are able to multi-task so that you can drink in my words of wisdom. OK: maybe the second proviso isn't so important.

John Paul II was not a good pope; his encyclicals are bland and boring. He was a shallow thinker and a lax governor. While child rapists like Fr Marciel were indulged and protected, anyone who dissented even slightly from Vatican II was subjected to penal and inclement retribution. To even compare this man to St Gregory or St Leo ("John Paul the Great") seems to me to border on blasphemy. IMHO he would have done far more for the Catholic faith had he stayed in the acting business. This beatification is a very grave mistake and Benedict will have to account for betraying the Church's millennial prudence to appease these silly pope-worshipping fanatics, who are now reducing the Church to a shambles.

Veritatis Splendor, Fides et Ratio, Evangelium Vitae were not bland or boring. On his watch Hans Kung was disciplined along with many other dissident theologians. I do not necessarily agree with an immediate title of "the Great" but I do think that he as a great pope. His beatification will result in a further rise in vocations - a rise that began during his pontificate. Many good and orthodox priests will acknowledge their debt to him.

I am amazed ever again by the narrow-mindedness (to avoid more insulting words that come to mind) of people like Ixoa. Charlemagne (who is called Charles the Great in German!) has been beatified by the church! There are many more saints, venerated for centuries, that would compare quite unfavourably to Blessed John Paul II. But of course some people in their infinite wisdom know better than Holy Mother Church...

Ixoa -

YOU are in error.

All Catholics have to ASSENT to this act, as an act of God. As Pope Benedict said in his homily, this is God's will.

There is no mistake, unless you suggest that God makes mistakes.

The late Holy Father is, according to the traditional teaching of the Church with regards to the Saints and Blesseds, now interceding for us in heaven. Let us thank God for his wondrous creation in the person of the Blessed John Paul II.

My previous comment was rash and uncharitable, apologies. As for the legacy of Blessed John Paul II, I think it best that I maintain silence in future.
