Father, do you know at all if Cardinal Pell and his staff are still going forward with their plan to renovate the cathedral down there?
I just find it odd that all this buzz surrounds Cardinal Pell's Mass while it was only a little while ago that the cardinal was being lambasted for the planned renovation...
The Cardinal has been celebrating the 1962 Mass every year of 2 for a while. This does not mean he encourages it or loves it. He is no lover of the liturgy. On the other hand his seminary does not teach or embrace the 1962 Mass. Seminarains are still exposed to a pentacostal approach and group hug mentality. Anyone who attended the 2005 Superdown Multiparish Confirmations with liturgical dances and every other abuse condemned by Benedict XVI knows it was arranged and attended by the Cardinal. The inconsistancy is unbelievable! The Cardinal favours a cerebral orthodoxy but has done little to stop liturgical and doctrinal abuses in the Parishes. He has done nothing to reform the seminary. I know him personally and know he celebrates the Mass to placate a group he knows side with him. He however needs to really reform his archdiocese.
In St Mary's Cathedral...They have recently installed LCD television screens rilling holes into the two rows of side aisle pillars. About 30 LCD tv screens altogether have been installed. All opposition were ignored. The Church has an exemption from the heritage laws so the sanctuary of the best Gothic revival Cathedral in the southern hemisphere is at risk. The Cardinal wants to change an intact sanctuary. He wants to put a hole in the very beautiful sanctuary floor mosaic and install a permanent stone altar in front of the old High Altar. (presently the novus ordo altar is wood and on a wooden platform that does not damage anything. He wants to install choir stalls (which is good) but the design is not really gothic revival. The bishop's throne has been moved and the stone base it used to be on near the high altar is empty. I do not know why Cardinal Pell is so lauded. He is inconsistent and has done some strange things. Pray for him.
