And I'm on my way...

All bets are off for me as Archbishop of Westminster. Just before April 1st draws to a close, I have found out that Pope Benedict has other ideas for myself and Fr Zuhlsdorf of the megablog What Does The Prayer Really Say. Apparently, we are to be appointed to the new Sacred Congregation for Internet Evangelisation. See the story from the Cross Reference: News: New dicastery for Catholic bloggers formed.

I can feel a song coming on...
Ode on the appointment of two priest bloggers to the newly-formed Congregatio pro Evangelizatio Interretiali
To the tune of "Me and Julio down by the school yard"

The cardinal prefect rolled out a bed
Heading up a new congregation
When the Papa found out he began to shout

And he issued a communication
It's within the law
It was within the law
What the Papa saw
It was within the law.

The prefect look round and muses aloud
We gotta team to hit dissension
The Papa said, "Sheesh, if I get that priest,
I'm gonna get him give my blog a mention."
Well I'm on my way.
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way I'm taking my time
But I don't know where
Goodbye to Brenda queen of the English
See you, me and Z in a
Roman dicastery
See you, me and Z in a Roman dicastery

In a couple of days they come and
Take me away
But the web can’t keep a secret
And when the radical priests
Found the news released
We were dissed in the back of the Tablet

And I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way, I'm taking my time
But I don't know where
Goodbye to Brenda queen of the English
See you, me and Z in a
Roman dicastery
See you, me and Z in a Roman dicastery
Singin’ me and Z in a Roman dicastery.

They're not, you know... Paddy Power have renewed the book, but they only seem to be doing a month at a time...

You're still in at 10-1.

I'm humbled. :)

And if my blogger template understood how to do linkbacks properly, I'd be a happier man.

Anyway, glad you got a kick out of it.

Congratulations, Father. This opening to new methods raises the possibility that they may let you pursue the work of the dicastery itself over the internet from Blackfen, with the Hermeneutic of Continuity still functional :)

For my money the Hermeneutic of Continuity and What Does the Prayer Really Say both seem important avenues for the implementation of Pope Benedict's policies. I hope they both keep unfolding day by day. Simply coming to grips with the name of your blog made me aware of what the pope is trying to do- and I am probably not the only one.

If you haven't heard of him already, as a third member of the team you might make a bid for Fr. Zakaria Botros, a Coptic priest who with sufficient tools and support seems perfectly capable of converting whole swaths of Muslims. His story is at http://tinyurl.com/2kqgeh. Also, you can find it at the Sober Inebriation blog for March 28th.

Thanks for all you do....

I wouldn't promote anyone who likes the music of Paul Simon. I can still remember toe curling assemblies where the strains of "Mrs Robinson" were considered suitable for young Catholic schoolboys by papists of a certain age ...

It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it. I'll give it an 85. (You'd have to be an American and over 50 to get the joke.)

The original reference you give to the new dicastery has some great comments. I wonder how many people you might fool with your version.
I also left a spoof on April lst and it fooled one reader completely.

It only dawned on me midway through April 2nd that we- I especially- have been well and truly had. Up till now it never occured to me to pray that you become the Archbishop of Westminster, but *that* would take the mickey out of you, I would guess, and the make blogland a much safer place for us naifs next April 1st. Anything along those lines would be great, a dusty dicastery in a corner someplace, a tribunal, a chancery, a congregation, with all the work in Latin-by candelight-in pen. The very thought of it makes me smile. Certainly there must be angels who will take my part in this and work it out! Note to self: Tell Outlook to prompt you every April 1st to be very, very wary and not make a bigger fool of yourself than usual that day, even though it is your special feastday!

Are you still on the Fanta?

I hope someone in the Vatican reads this post and realises it would be a Very Good Thing.

I look forward to an announcement in the Bollettino.

By the way, Father, that's a smashing song.

Japhy - that was a fun post of yours: thanks very much for the idea!

Lee - a congregation, with all the work in Latin - by candelight - in pen Now that would be great! My brother-in-law did a lot of work on pen-based security (no two people have exactly the same handwriting) so it would solve all security problems for the Vatican. Twould be a great example of the hermeneutic of continuity in action :-)

Fr. Tim,

Forget the betting for Westminster.

Apparently Paddy Power has opened a book on who will eventually be named the patron saint of blogging.

Fr Z. is the 2-1 favourite but you're running him a close second!

Would you settle for being co-patron?

:-)

On a much more serious note and returning to the question of the Westminster succession I am astonished that no-one seems too have picked up on Abbot Hugh's astonishing statement that he can't stay in Pluscarden forever!!! This was made in an interview he gave to the Spectator and which was published in the edition Tuesday, 18th March 2008. The full article is available at:

http://www.spectator.co.uk/the-magazine/features/563866/a-holy-man-tipped-to-lead-the-nations-catholics.thtml

But here are the amazing final paragraphs:

"As I get up to leave, I have my last lesson in holiness, which is that you just can’t second-guess it. Would you ever leave Pluscarden? I ask, expecting a definitive ‘no’. But Fr Hugh looks thoughtful: ‘Yes, I think it is time to leave. I can’t stay there forever, though I have no idea what I’ll do next.’ And equally unexpected is an email I receive a week later:

Dear Mary,

You may well have decided that I was not worth ‘profiling’, which I would quite understand. If not, am I allowed a little follow-up?

I like the idea that beauty and holiness are the apologia for Christianity. The beauty of Christianity needs to shine out more; this is where the celebration of the liturgy becomes central. And the goodness of Christianity, i.e. the holiness of self-giving love (the witness of charity) and of prayer, needs to be sustained and developed. And this too, certainly: that the one thing Christianity has to offer is Easter. Simply: Christ is risen!

Sincerely,

Fr Hugh"

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't the whole point of the Benedictine vow of stability that a monk stay "forever" (in this mortal life) in his monastery? It looks very much like Abbot Hugh is running for office!

Ha Ha!
but we continue to pray that a devout priest, faithful and loyal to the Holy Father and the teaching of the Church, fearless and a defender of the Truth will be appointed.Does that sound like anyone you know?

Animadversor said...

Ah, ought that not to be Congregatio pro Evangelizatione Interretiali? I think that those of us who press for the greater use of Latin in the Church ought to be very careful not to make easily avoidable mistakes when using Latin ourselves, lest we open ourselves up to easy ridicule which undermines our cause.

Fr Tim Finigan said...

You're eabsolutely right - should have checked it before pasting. Thank you. Latin keeps us humble...

Animadversor said...

Your Reverence, I rather feared what effect posting that correction might have on my own humility, but I see that kind of blunder so often and it just makes me cringe. There are plenty of people who are more than competent in Latin who are not advocates of its greater use, and this sort of thing gives them to say that we advocates are really just lovers of obscurantism, of mumbo-jumbo. In some cases, at least, I think they may be right.
