Rare footage of St Pio
This charming video of St Pio of Pietrelcina shows some rare footage of the saintly Franciscan with his brothers. At times there is an atmosphere of playfulness redolent of the Fioretti of St Francis. At the end, they are obviously teasing him about the camera and he hits the cameraman with his cincture. We see him in the refectory and in the Church, and there are scenes of his brothers dealing with the massive postbag which he generated. Starting at 4'23" there is some footage of Padre Pio as celebrant at High Mass.

Great stuff. We Capuchins are a fun bunch. When I went on pilgrimage to San Giovanni with some of my classmates, we were shown the video of Pio smacking some other friar with his cord, and then we began to do it ourselves.
St. Pio, pray for us!
This video made me realise that every action should be for God, no matter how seemingly simple. It also made me realise how far I am from doing that.
Lord have mercy.
Lovely footage - thank you, Father.
Charming! Thank you, Father!
Yes, beautiful video of Padre Pio, showing him in community and his playful side.
As a seminarian in Rome in the early 60s it was customary for all of us to go on a three-day ‘vacation’ during the Easter break. As we had our own touring bus we could go anywhere. Destinations included Assisi, Pisa, Ravenna, Siena, etc. We took a vote each year as to where we would go.
One year it was suggested that we go to San Giovanni Rotondo to see Padre Pio. However, the idea was scotched by the Italian students (it was an international college…) saying that Padre Pio didn’t appreciate religious visiting him in tourist fashion and would tell us to “go back to your monastery and pray!”
A missed opportunity!
Re the scene where the friar behind the grille is handing out tickets: is that Mary Pyle taking the tickets and distributing them to the crowd?
Thank you for sharing this video. A great start to my day. PAX!
