Hasten the complete conversion of our country

Gillibrand has photos of an ex voto at the Basilica of Our Lady of Victories in Paris. It was set up in memory of Fr Ignatius Spencer who had requested prayers at the shrine for the conversion of England. (See For the total conversion of England!)

Incidentally, I have given the link above to the English language part of the basilica's website. There are more articles and photographs in the French section, including this picture by Charles-André van Loo showing St Augustine confounding the Donatist bishops at Carthage.

The ex-voto was placed there in memory of Fr Ignatius Spencer C.P. who had died the previous October. At his request, prayers for the conversion of England had been offered at Notre Dame des Victoires since 1838 (although the ex-voto plaque says 1837), being added to the already existing intention of prayers for the conversion of sinners offered by the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary which had recently been founded by the Rector of Notre Dame des Victoires, the Abbé Desgenettes.

Intersting stuff given that Newmn's beatification would seeem to be on the way. Mrs Parkes, where can I read your post on Mgr Leonard. Please reply with web directions. I knew the Mgr as a doughty Anglo-Catholic in West London.

Has anyone read the book called "The Realm, An Unfashionable Essay on the Conversion of England" by Aidan Nichols O.P.?

It made for quite a refreshing read.

Yes, it is a good book. I mentioned it a while back.

All should read it, it sets out what will be a very effective framework upon which to rebuild the Catholic Faith in this land of ruins.

I bought my copy from Southwell Books.

I assume this Passionist was the basis for soon-be-Blessed John Henry Newman's hero in Loss and Gain who becomes a Passionist priest?
