St Fidelis Church, Kansas

In response to my post about St Fidelis, Mary from Kansas left a comment referring to this magnificent Church known as "the Cathedral of the Plains" (though it is not actually a Cathedral).

It is known as one of the "Eight wonders of Kansas"; when it was built, it was the largest Church west of the Mississippi river. the exterior of the church is constructed with blocks of local limestone weighing 50-100 pounds each.

Above the High Altar there is a painting of the martyrdom of St Fidelis:

Another beautiful church is just a fw miles away. Although no longer having mass, the tiny local community is maintaining it and keeping it open to the public.

Both communities have cemeteries with Volgsa iron cross grave markers. http://www.kansastravel.org/holycrosscemetery.htm

Anonymous,

I thought about adding the link to that church as well. I understand that Mass is occasionally celebrated there, maybe a few times per year, on special occasions. Hope so--it is a truly beautiful church.

Oh, and the cemeteries! I'm going to have to take a drive to the western part of the state to see those. Those crosses are really lovely.
