News of Reggie

Many old Romans studied Latin with Fr Reginald Foster - those who didn't, missed out. A remarkable teacher, he always inspired his students with enthusiasm and a lifelong affection for him and for Latin.

I was very pleased to read news of him in the Milwaukee Catholic Herald which tells of his stay at Clement Manor, Greenfield, where he is receiving physical and occupational therapy after a variety of medical problems. He has made a big impact on the medical staff - nobody who knows him will be surprised at that.

Fr Tim:

Have you heard his current interview on Vatican Radio? Really great fun. He sounds suitably 'in the pink', or should I say rose as we approach Gaudete Sunday.

The other day my Jesuit History prof who worked at the Jesuit Curia for a time mentioned off-hand Reginold Foster and how Fr. Foster had told him at one time that he wrote Humanae Vitae. At least the latin and started it with the Genative, like a good Ciceronian letter should be done. It seems like every person who I've met whose studied in Rome knew Fr. Foster.

A bit off topic I know but how did "Gaudete in Domino semper iterum dico gaudete" as in yesterday's second reading from St Paul to the Philippians become the banal "I want you to be happy; always happy in the Lord. I repeat, what I want is your happiness."?
