Thanks so much for this lovely post, father. I hope that everyone who visits your site and listens to this beautiful rendition of "God Bless America" will pray for this country and for its leaders. And if you are ever in Texas on the 4th, you should have no trouble finding a friendly welcome, some of the best barbecued beef you've ever tasted, and plenty of Shiner Bock to wash it down with. Cheers!

To celebrate, I'm reading Loyalist Thomas Hutchinson's Strictures upon the Declaration of Independence

Perhaps God will grant the grace to the people in Her Majesty's North American Colonies the gift of true repentance for their rebellion and insurrection and future tranquil docility and loyal submission to The Crown?

Excellent Post, Fr. Many thanks. Happy 4 July to all your North American readers and all I would say to them is: "Look. Let by-gones be by-gones. We'll have you back in the Empire, anytime. Be pink on the map, again, and we won't mention it again".

I'm in Paris at the moment where a certain Treaty was signed in 1784 by the representative of King George III,

"Acknowledging the Thirteen Colonies to be free, sovereign and independent States, and that the British Crown and all heirs and successors relinquish claims to the Government, propriety, and territorial rights of the same, and every part thereof"

Surely it is part of a good British character to lose gracefully.

Thanks Fr. Tim. For once, the weather was awful here, [no rain, but cloud coverage most of day[ but the fireworks still came out nice! Just got back from a "good spot" by the water where we were able to watch 3 different fireworks shows simultaneously.

I certainly hope that it is part of the British character to lose gracefully, given the amount of practice we get at it !

This Fourth of July email that I opened this morning at Erith Library:

Roy --

The Fourth of July is especially dear to my family. For us, it is not just our nation's birthday. It is the day Michelle and I became parents 12 years ago. And I can't wait to watch the fireworks with Malia on her birthday tonight, as we do every year.

As we celebrate the profound pride of being American, today is a time to honor the women and men in our armed forces, whose immeasurable bravery and sacrifice have made our country what it is today.

That sacrifice is shared with husbands and wives, with sons and daughters, with fathers and mothers, who are asked to wait at home as their loved ones protect our nation. Their heroism, too, has helped pave the path of our freedom.

Even before we moved into the White House, Michelle was a champion for those military families. She has witnessed their struggles, and she has made it her personal mission to fight for them. On this Fourth of July, she recorded a personal message, commemorating our nation's birthday and paying tribute to these families.

Please take a minute to watch Michelle's video -- and join us as we honor our military families here and abroad:

From all of us, happy Independence Day.

Thank you, and may God bless America.

Our Lady of the Rosary pray for London & the USA tonight!

HOPE not hate public meeting

The US far right mobilises against Obama

London
Thursday 22 July, 6.30pm
Unison
Council Chamber
1 Mabledon Place
London WC1H 9AJ

Two hundred years of white supremacy was seemingly put to an end with the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Slavery, lynchings and segregation was considered a thing of the past as the United States chose its first non-white leader. Even Obama joined pundits in applauding this new 'post-racial' America.

The euphoric headlines were too good to be true and many Americans remain unwilling to accept a black President. And now they are fighting back. From the Tea Parties to the militias, the anti-immigration movement to the Christian right, the far right is re-organising and rebuilding.

At this special HOPE not hate public meeting Devin Burghart, vice-President of the Institute for Research and Education for Human Rights, will talk about the rise of the US right and its increasing ferocity in its attacks on Obama.

With immigration set to become a major political issue over the coming year and the economy continuing to struggle, Devin will look at the threats ahead and ask what really changed with the election of Barack Obama.

If you would like to attend any of the meetings please click here

I look forward to seeing you there

All the best
