Our Lady of the Taper

Fr Jason at the Welsh National Shrine of Our Lady of the Taper in Cardigan has a regular TLM at the shrine which is well attended. The photos are from the Palm Sunday Mass at the shrine. (The website tells the story of the shrine.)

Latin is particularly helpful in Wales where many people have Welsh as their first language and all signs have to be bilingual. The use of the universal language of the Church overcomes the sensitive question of the vernacular.

Fr Jason also tells of the now regular Sunday TLM at Lourdes which he came across on a recent pilgrimage. He also saw a confessional that advertised both rites for the sacrament.

Thanks for this too, Father. I have a friend in Wales, so I will be sending this to him.

Regarding the Confessional, when you say both forms, do you mean the older one is the one where you put your Confession inside a Confiteor?

Father

May I kindly ask if you know the times and places when the old rite is celebrated in Lourdes?

Thanks,

Mark - the older form would refer principally to the form of absolution with the misereatur, indulgentiam and then the different form for the declarative absolution. As far as the penitent is concerned, the older form would certainly remove any scruple about putting the confession inside the Confiteor although most priests would, I hope, be sensible enough not to comment if somebody did that using the new rite.

Ottaviani - I don't know, but I will be in Lourdes at the end of May and will be interested to see how the scheduled Masses are getting on - and whether there are a number of private Masses, for example in the Immaculate Conception Basilica. On my pilgrimage, we are hoping to be able to use the altars there.

Fr Jason has just let me know that the TLM at Lourdes on Sunday is at 9.30am at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

This was the first time that I've served the extraordinary rite of the Mass, but despite my slight nervousness at having a morning's notice, I did enjoy the experience.

Just a request for some clarification on the form of Confession. You mentioned, Father, that the traditional rite would remove any scruple about putting the confession inside the Confiteor. Presumably this refers to the recitation of the Confiteor at the beginning of Confession. I'd thought that was optional, but is there an issue here that I'm not aware of (actually I'm ignorant on the matter!)? Thank you.

Fr Tim Finigan said...

Yes, it is optional - in the old rite, it was perfectly acceptable to say "I confess etc. ... through my own most grievous fault; and in particular... and therefore I ask blessed Mary ever virgin etc..."

Some liturgical obsessives would say that you shouldn't do this in the new rite but should have a reading or something. But I think most priests would accept people's confession in such a form in either rite.
