Bl John Duns Scotus centenary symposium
The Franciscans of the Immaculate have issued this publicity notice for their conference in the autumn. I'll be giving a paper on the Thursday. The image is of a flyer for the event (click to enlarge)
The Symposium, which is being held in commemoration of the 7th Centenary of the death of Blessed John Duns Scotus, is focused on one of the most important aspects of the thought of this great theologian, who was so closely associated with England and Scotland, namely, his Mariology. Scotus, styled by Pope Paul VI "the perfector" of St. Bonaventure and "the most distinguished representative" of the Franciscan School, is today the object of ever increasing interest both on account of the almost unparalleled richness of his philosophical and theological speculation, and because work on the long awaited critical edition of his works is now beginning to draw to a conclusion. “Duns Scotus,” said John Paul II, “with his splendid doctrine on the primacy of Christ, on the Immaculate Conception, on the primary value of the Revelation and of the Magisterium of the Church, on the authority of the Pope, on the capability of human reason to make the great truths of faith accessible, at least in part, … is even today a pillar of Catholic theology, an original Teacher, full of ideas and incentives for an ever more complete knowledge of the truth of the faith.”
The International Centenary Symposium, which is under the patronage of the Religious Institute of Pontifical Right known as the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, will take place from 9th-11th September in the attractive surroundings of Grey College of the University of Durham, about half a mile from the centre of that great, historic city. The programme includes 12 conferences by some of the most notable figures in Scotistic theology and Mariology from around the world. Full-board, residential accommodation is available from 8th September, in single rooms with en-suite facilities. Day attendance is possible. Holy Mass will be celebrated daily. There will also be an evening musical concert and a half-day pilgrimage to Duns in Scotland. The Symposium would be of interest to diocesan priests and religious, as part of their on-going formation, and also to members of the laity.
