This is a Votive Mass in honour of Our Lady for the season of Advent, celebrated by candlelight early in the morning or in the evening since Pius XII gave permission for Evening Mass.
(For those who complain about my focus on the Classical Rite, these were Novus Ordo Masses - but note the orientation: that makes a big difference!)

If there were Novus Ordo Masses, then the orientation doesn't matter much. The Novus Ordo Missae is an offence to the Almight God!
But in the NO is it a votive Mass? It seems to be just the Mass of the advent weekday. But I don't own a missal so can't check.
Beautiful!
Amazing photo. Lovely tradition as well. We have 2 Colombian families in our town who keep up the SAmerican tradition of getting up at 5, filling the house with candles and saying the rosary on 8th Dec.
In the NO, you could use one of the Masses in the collection of Masses of the BVM - there are some for Advent as I recall.
Br Anthony - if you are right, them Pope Benedict is wrong. Now let me see, which one shall I choose....
I'll share photos of the ad orientem OF Mass celebrated in Glasgow each Sunday at St Patrick's (once I've worked out the etiquette for taking photos)
Br Anthony - what Fr Tim said
It may be of interest to some that, perhaps next year, we will succeed in having a few Advent Rorate Masses early in the morning (6:00am), in the extraordinary form.
We attempted to do so this year and had the pastor's permission, but the priest celebrating wanted to be sure of something in the calendar with votive Mass substitutions, classes, etc. It will be studied so that we know for next year and perhaps I will bring you pictures of an early morning High Mass under candlelight.
Fr. Finigan,
In this respect, the pope is wrong. But it is not I who is right; it is Tradition, both Sacred and Ecclesiastical.
The reality is that the New Mass is a Protestantized version. How can this ever be pleasing to God? To reject this truth is very grave. The New Mass has had forty years to prove its worth and it has brought nothing, but the loss of Faith for hundreds of millions.
If you are celebrating it, I plead with you to stop. Celebrate ONLY the Traditional Mass.
God bless.
Brother Anthony - it is not true to say that the New Mass has brought nothing but loss of faith to millions. Many Catholics have had their faith nourished by the New Mass celebrated reverently. (e.g. at the Assumption Grotto as in the post.) I would agree that the Traditional Mass would nourish their faith better and I agree with many criticism of the new Mass, e.g. the Ottaviani intervention.
In the end, you can't get out of setting yourself up against the Pope. He also believes in sacred and ecclesiastical tradition: you and he differ on how that applies in this case.
I would love to say only the traditional Mass but I believe in Pope Benedict's approach to reform.
