Photo of Sitting Bull wearing a crucifix

"Have you ever seen the non-cropped version of the Sitting Bull?" was the question put to Taylor Marshall by Fr Phil Wolfe. The above photo (from Taylor's Canterbury Tales blog) may seem very familiar, but the crucifix is not normally shown.

Sitting Bull became a Catholic in later life, being influenced by the friendship of the French Canadians. Roman Christendom also has a lengthy post about him: A Roman Catholic Sioux leader: Chief Sitting Bull

How often?

Well, the Wikipedia article on him specifically has the picture with the Crucifix and mentions his conversion.

Sitting Bull participated in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. Curiously, Bill also became a Catholic.

Indeed - and if you check the history of the article, you will see that the uncropped photo was put in on 9 April 2011.

Wikipedia can be good ;-)

A bit late to the party, me!

Here's an image of Sitting Bull's crucifix at the Little Bighorn Battlefield Museum:

It's not the same one as worn in the photo ... but like most Catholics, he probably had more than a few. The caption states: "Never-before-seen rosary belonging to Sitting Bull collected by Lt. Elmer Curtis the night Sitting Bull was killed."
