Catholic Bishops’ Conference statement on lifting of excommunications of SSPX Bishops

A spokesperson for the Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales said:

“The Bishops of England & Wales acknowledge the lifting of the excommunication of four SSPX bishops.

“The Bishops draw attention to the fact that this is the first step in enabling the fraternity of SSPX to move towards full communion and doctrinal unity within the Catholic Church.

“In harmony with Pope Benedict XVI, the Bishops of England & Wales hope that this act will consolidate reciprocal relations of trust and to intensify and stabilise the relations of the Fraternity of SSPX and the Holy See.”

What Doctrinal Unity?

Fr.,

It would seem that this was issued before Bishop Fellay's statement that he had disciplined W. and forbidden him in future to speak on politics or history.

We are not to know whether they were told that Bishop Fellay's statement was in the offing. At least a statement was made.

It's hard to believe that the Holy Father and Bp Fellay did not agree at some point over the past few days that the latter's announcemt about W. was the only option.

It is wonderful because it is clear that Bp Fellay does not want a derailment of Benedict's initiative.

Let's see if the secular media pick this up, or whether they will continue with their usual agenda.

I'm going to be watching that like a hawk, and I'm sure you will be too.

"doctrinal unity" - who are they kidding? The Bishops of England & Wales have shown for decades how united they can be, at times, with the authentic teachings of the Church.

The parable of Our Lord comes to mind: "Judge not, that you may not be judged, For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again. Any why seest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye; and seest not the beam that is in thy own eye? Or how sayest thou to thy brother: Let me cast the mote out of thy eye; and behold a beam is in thy own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam in thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." (Matthew 7)

Have read it several times over. All I can say is that the CBCEW spokesperson must be a 'master of the understated'!

Still, it's good to know that the Bishops of E&W are 'in harmony with Pope Benedict XVI'. Was there ever any doubt?

What an effusive welcome!

Calm yourselves gentlemen.

They're giddy with joy!

Ha - you can't sense any joy or excitement in their message can you? I think they were probably lost for words. My Bishop, Thomas Mcmahon (of Brentwood) lives just a couple of doors from me. I wonder what he REALLY thinks about the lifting of the excommunications.

Hardly a warm welcome home is it Father?

Reading this text, it makes you realise that it must have been hard for the CBCEW spokesman to contain himself.

"Harmony" wasn't she one of those stunningly attractive flying angels in Captain Scarlet?

In all the fuss about Richard Williamson, what of Hans Küng?

His disparagement of the late Pope John Paul II’s Polishness made and make him the authentic voice of the age-old Teutonic racism against the Slavs. He only gets away with it because he is Swiss.

Although long resident in Germany, Küng is not an EU citizen. So his exclusion from the United Kingdom would be perfectly simple to accomplish. That exclusion is very long overdue.
