Today Christmas Repeal Vote

Fr Stephen Langridge tells of the Christmas "legislative wish list" of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. You are invited to send in a nomination for one law to be repealed. I agree with Fr Stephen that it would be a good idea for as many people as possible to nominate the Abortion Act 1967. If it gets to the top six, it could generate some good pro-life publicity. Send in a nomination at the Christmas Repeal Vote page.

Just done it, even though I live in another jurisdiction!!

All I put in was my name and in the nominations box "Abortion Act 1967". No e-mail address or phone number, but system did not reject when I clicked the Submit button.

Might it be better if rather than click the link on the post, people typed in the web address of the BBC web page from their ownhome page? That way the BBC could not dismiss the result as a campaign by a blogger. The BBC might then be rather surprised by the number of people who voted to repeal the 1967 Act and came to the conclusion themselves rather than being "got up"to do it by a Catholic website. Just a thought.

I'm not convinced that nominating the Abortion Act is a good idea. Realistically this program is not going to cause a major Act of Parliament to be repealed but it might give an excuse for the abortion law to be changed. Unfortunately the pro-abortion majority in Parliament is at a record high and any change to the current law would certainly be for the worse (e.g. Nadine Dorries's recent bill). We should be looking to raise awareness about things like the recent Legislative Reform Bill which, though far less well known, devolves greater powers from Parliament to ministers and potentially could allow anti-life amendments to existing laws to be made more easily than before.

Yes, that's a thought - but I expect that there would be other issues that are the object of campaigns.

(To do this - you don't need to type anything, just right-click the link, select "copy link location" (Firefox) or "copy shortcut" (IE) then open a new window or tab and just paste it into the address bar.)

Thanks for this, I have copied the post directly and used it for my blog, and e-mailed it to my mates...am guessing you are ok with that...

David - of course, no problem.

Edmund, I entirely agree with you that any attempt to change the law on Abortion in Parliament by a "time limit" Bill or any other such means would be likely to make things much worse given the massive pro-abortion majority in the House. I do see the danger of this particular campaign giving an excuse to introduce something like that. I was only attracted by the blunt nature of the proposal for repeal.

Nominations closed this morning. It will be interesting to see whether we made it to the top six, altough I suspect the Countryside Alliance would have given us a run for our money over the ban on fox-hunting (we love cute furry animals more than babies over here). Incidentally, this vote doesn't actually affect the law. It might just be a little victory to give heart to all those struggling to promote the pro-life cause out there!
