Saggy Trousers / Baggy Pants

Whether you are British or American, I'm sure you have become fed up with the phenomenon of these pantaloons. My Way tells the story of a US Church that has forbidden them. 10 rules for dating my daughter has an amusing answer to them.

Actually, of the latter, my favourite is:
Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilising a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Ha-ha!!!! that was *my* dad too.

Add "have her home by 11, or I will come looking for you personally."

Of all the trends that reflect a "dumpy" mentality and styling, I have to say this one is the most ammusing.

One wonders, how DO the pants stay up?

I did once see an "urban trendy" youth who was sportin' his slacks in this fashion to show off his boxer shorts that had smiley faces all over them.

In spite of myself, I looked, I laughed, and I vowed to remain vigilant against any fashion faux pas that would allow an interlocutor to declare "I see London, I see France..."

Oh the girls do the trouser thing too! Like at the 5.30pm Mass..me 'Can't you pull those trousers up?' Teen looks 'what's ya problem?'..me..oh whatever! Only one out of the 8 like that so suppose that's not bad going..I find my PP very patient with teenagers...keeps them coming to Mass & none lapsed thus far...I am much less judgemental to teenagers than i used to be..none of us is perfect yet afterall..& they might have much closer relationships with God than the perfectly dressed teen...interesting topic..

I wish my dad were like this!

Apart from the ban on happiness, that is. I kinda like happiness :)

Jackie - oh, sure, I get on OK with teenagers. But part of this is having a laugh with/at them - so long as you are prepared for them to laugh at you too. But I'd prefer them to laugh at me for being a crusty middle-aged man than to laugh at me for trying to be "hip".

That must be one of the most hilarious fashions to date - the first time I saw a handsome chap walk past half-dressed like that, I couldn't stop laughing - he obviously thought he looked cool, but to me he just looked like a baby toddling along with his nappy hanging down!!!

As to girls dressing immodestly, especially at Mass, and whether or not they are close to God, I think This author
of a pamphlet on modesty puts it in a nutshell -

It is widely known that Pope Pius XII often said: "The greatest sin of our modern generation is that it has lost all sense of sin." It is less known that more specifically he once stated: “Many women . . . give in to the tyranny of fashion, be it even immodest, in such a way as to appear not even to suspect that it is unbecoming. They have lost the very concept of danger: they have lost the instinct of modesty." These words spoken over 50 years ago ring more true today than ever (and not only for women). For in today's post-Christian society where indecent and improper dress has become the norm, even among good-willed and devout Catholics there is much ignorance as to what is meant by proper Christian modesty. Yes, even the most virtuous of Catholics who attend daily Mass and have an intimate relationship with Jesus, frequently are not fully aware of the Church's teaching in this matter. (The author goes on to mention these incidents from Padre Pio's life)..
When coming to confess, if their dresses were low-cut or too short, St. Padre Pio would send the women away, refusing them this Sacrament. As dresses in the 60's became scantier and scantier, he sent larger and larger numbers of women away. It finally came to pass — since he was sending so many away — that his fellow friars posted a sign on the door of the Church which read: "By Padre Pio's explicit wish, women must enter the confessional wearing skirts at least 8 inches below the knee.…"
If those whom he refused asked why, he treated them in this manner, he would answer: "Don't you know what pain it costs me to shut the door on anyone? The Lord has forced me to do so. I do not call anyone, nor do I refuse anyone either. There is someone else who calls and refuses them. I am His useless tool."
And Catholics who are immodestly dressed should be aware of what Our Lady of Fatima told Blessed Jacinta Marto in 1919 -
"Certain fashions are to be introduced which will offend Our Lord very much. Those who serve God should not follow these fashions. The Church has no fashions. Our Lord is always the same."
It's not really a case of being "judgemental" of young people, more a case of guarding their souls in two important aspects of Modesty, one avoiding being an occasion of sin, and two, being instilled with the spirit of modesty inspired by a deep love for the virtue of chastity, and by the proper understanding that our clothing is meant to enhance the dignity of the human body.

I like to point out to these young men that this trend began in prisons and were a way of advertising that you were willing to be "the girl" in the relationship. I've seen quite few boys hitch their britches up mighty quick.

BTW, thanks for the inspiration,Maggie, and Fr. Tim.

I don't think this silly 'fashion' will ever catch on with my age group (mid 50's!) Fr Tim. I mean it doesn't even bear thinking about, unless you want to give yourself a double hernia from rolling around on the floor in fits of laughter!

George, I'm not so sure...it seems to have caught on with many a middle aged plumber. Have you had a sink repaired lately?

Karen - I'm one of these DIY enthusiasts and do all my own sinks and plumbing, electrics, etc...., but I think I know what you mean, which is another good reason for not employing one around the house!
